That's why I think opportunity cost is the single most important idea in school improvement. Every hour our teachers—and our students—spend on one thing is an hour they don't have to spend on something else. And this matters most of all for students who find learning hardest...

Does direct instruction work? Some claimed Stockard et al. (2018) meta-analysis didn't compare DI to inquiry-based teaching for math. We reanalyzed the data. DI was significantly MORE effective than inquiry-based (d = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.49 to 0.70). @CECMembership @NCTM @ehanford

I honestly think Matt Burns deserves paper of the year for this one. This paper was years overdue. His secondary meta analysis directly compares IBL and DI. It showed that DI outperformed. No other meta, to my knowledge has made this direct comparison before.

Ben Solomon: Memorization should not be a dirty word in math. Adults are the problem, NOT kids. Kids are proud when they memorize math facts. This is essential for later math.

Timed practice is the core for mastering math facts.
Ben Solomon: “as Anita Archer says, we have no documented cases of students dying from timed practice”

I need to repost this as Anita Archer's keynote yesterday at ResearchEd Toronto discussed the convergence of the three sciences.
This is seriously my favorite book I've read in my 26-year professional career. I read this book in one day, taking copious notes throughout. The author, Paige Pullen contends that effective literacy instruction requires insights from three complementary knowledge bases:
Literacy science
Learning science
Instructional science
This book is pure brilliance. I honestly hope it sells a million copies. This should be a core academic book in every school of education AND one that should be read by every single educator out there. It really is that good!

When first reported, 2025’s jobs reports added up to 1.2 million new jobs.
After revisions, the economy added just 116,000 — 90% less.

💯 y11 daughter in tears last night as whole chemistry set had to move rooms as couldn’t remove one disruptive pupil and a maths teacher who just puts a timer on board when class won’t focus and….just waits. Hours of learning time lost. She feels desperate and can’t do anything

"too many states have chosen to tell parents their children are on track when they aren’t" say Arne Duncan and Margaret Spellings in a new Ed Week piece linked below.
These charts compare the most recent National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) 4th gr reading and math reports with the state testing reports.
The discrepancies are surprising. If judged by national standards, students in most states are not as proficient in reading and math as the state tests say they are. Link to more charts below.
