Critical commentary about "tech bros" and "mediocre white men" has been circulating the news and mediasphere lately. This inspired me to write another (a third) essay in my years-long rumination on "diversity" in the startup and broader tech world. siliconhillslawyer.com/2024/…

Seeing more universities/colleges giving guaranteed admission if you hit X GPA and SAT threshold. Exactly the kind of thing we need to de-escalate the adolescent opportunity cost arms race. You did enough, you have requisite IQ, well done now please go, date, and be normal.

We can sort our geniuses, our cognitive aristocracy, and our nobility, and also our normies without having them all engage in fake academic/"extracurricular" kabuki theatre turning them into miserable (and eventually unwed/childless) sheep. We're not Asia.

And demanding that this "pay gap" be closed - even if it means under-paying men who work more hours - ends up artificially benefiting childless women and harming mothers who are depending on the incomes of their husbands. So, stop it and be meritocratic?
“A growing body of research suggests that the primary cause of the gender pay gap is motherhood. Before people become parents, women earn as much as or even more than men do. Afterwards, on average, they earn less.” stevestewartwilliams.com/p/d…

Many (most?) women do not WANT to work as much as men do after they become moms. That's healthy! Stop shaming them for their free choices. And stop penalizing their husbands who work harder to help pay for their wife's prioritization of their kids. This is a *family unit.*

My most recurring thought over the last few years has been: “goddam the founding fathers were geniuses to structure our system they way they have” and “thank god for the first and second amendments in equal measure” You don’t appreciate what you have until you see others go without. There is no backup plan. Never blackpill. 🇺🇸

They're coming around to realizing the real problem isn't America, but their own childish petulance. You're not going to get our military support while helping our rival build its military. China raised the cost of security, so our protection fees have gone up. Pay up.

Basically close the border to everyone not in the 1% of talent, and gradually import every Taiwanese person who wants to leave to America. Massively high productivity people who hate the CCP. We can’t lose with this.

In next 10-20 yrs we will have a pool of maybe 10-15 million super high productivity, anti-communist, relatively low paid “refugees”desperate to move to America. Between that labor pool and AI/robotics, we’ve got all of our non-elite labor needs covered. 歡迎來到美國!

A very “meta” problem is that a lot of our best speech givers actually are really shi**y politicians, when you assess results, and a lot of our best politicians really suck at giving speeches. I loved Obama’s speeches too. Eloquence is overrated.
Since Obama is back on the stump today, here’s your reminder of the best political speech of my lifetime. If you haven’t heard it or haven’t heard it in a while, enjoy getting fired up and ready to go. 👊🏼 🌊

America: “Our Asians are better than your Asians.”
While Nvidia beats sky-high expectations every quarter, China’s second-biggest AI chip designer’s Q3 revenue missed revenue expectations by a massive 44% due to capacity constraints and memory shortages. China’s AI chipmaking remains massively constrained due to export controls. Interestingly, the last time Nvidia missed revenue expectations was August 2022–one month before US export controls on AI chips went into effect.

In your 40s you will start feeling that sense of boredom. That itch to switch things up just to feel alive. All of our best ancient wisdom says you have many good options for novelty and challenge, but do not cheat on your wife, and do not buy that Porsche Turbo. 🫡
Life is hard. Buy that Porsche Turbo. Make it harder.

The lesson from Lula winning (after Bolsonaro was priced ~82%) is that prediction markets are just a function of polls—which are increasingly unreliable. There’s no signal from betting odds… just more opportunity to speculate. Expect a lot of “surprises” during midterms.

Just throwing this out there: leave NYC (or SF, LA) and stop competing for scarce space and lifestyle with global elites who out earn you 10x? It’s a big country. NYC is a neighborhood you are simply priced out of. Otherwise, it’s your choice to stay. Accept tradeoffs.

Didn’t Venezuelans vote in the people who devolved it into an impoverished narco-socialist state? Are we going to just say they’ve learned their lesson, please trust them again? Next round make it (deliberate air quotes) “democracy.”
