We’ve been looking into ways police officers can reduce tension in interactions with their communities from the start. We find adding just one sentence—what we call a “transparency statement”—can help build trust. Read about our work now in The Boston Globe! 👇🏻
Many people are on edge when they encounter an officer, but there’s an easy way for law enforcement to set the right tone, write @andreagdittmann and Kyle Dobson in #GlobeIdeas. trib.al/PLatiru

Low-SES students are often portrayed as lacking skills. We test the effect of reframing this narrative in a field trial (N=786). Highlighting the strengths low-SES students show boosted grades over one semester, closing an SES-performance gap.

I had a wonderful four years at @EmoryGoizueta & will miss my amazing colleagues there (who were so supportive of me in my first tenure-track role 💙💛). Looking forward to the next chapter at USC! Fight on! ✌🏻
We're *checks calendar* less than 6 months out from the 2024 election (how?!), so I'm super happy to see our paper about reframing voting as a duty to others get out into the world - please check it out! pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22…
Excited to see this out! w/ @andreagdittmann and @hannah_birnbaum, we find that construing voting as a duty to others predicts political interest and engagement
As the 2024 election nears, we hope this helps inform voter turnout interventions!

This semester I've been teaching "Economic Inequality and Growth" at @UCBerkeley. This is a thread with some of my favorite graphs.

TL;DR: In this work with @NFendinger and @andreagdittmann, social-class gaps in deductive reasoning disappear when questions recruit theory of mind.

Have you ever suspected that you earn less in your fancy job because you're from a working-class family? The Class Ceiling showed how that worked in the UK; new article out today @SF_Journal with @SamFriedmanSoc shows there's ALSO a big class pay gap in the US. About $23k!

ALT title = Earnings in EGP I by Class Origin. dot-wing plots of estimated average annual earnings for people (in top jobs in the US) from 4 class origins - higher prof/mgr estimated earnings are a little over $120k; lower prof/mgr and intermediate origins both a little over $110k; routine/manual earnings a little under $100k.
🚨 Now out at JEPG! 🚨
After college students graduate & head off to the workforce, there are many opportunities to collaborate at work. Do these opportunities reduce cultural mismatch for college grads from working-class backgrounds? (1/3)
Not always: We find that it depends on what orgs value. Many orgs continue to value individual contributors instead of team players—creating a cultural mismatch. Only when orgs also value working together do employees from working-class backgrounds feel like they fit in (2/3)
