Introducing Vertebrai, MARA’s managed flexible load service. There’s power all over the grid that no one is using. A data center pays for it months before it can fill the space. A wind farm gets told to stop when the grid is full. Vertebrai puts that power to work, then steps aside the moment it’s needed. Watch how it works:

“Bitcoin’s lack of representation [in Washington] is evidence of its meaningfully superior decentralization.” @DavidZell_ shares how the broader crypto industry — fueled by ICO funding — had an outsized voice on Capitol Hill that only seemed to benefit Bitcoin when convenient for those organizations.
Despite years of policy advocacy, spending Bitcoin in the U.S. has triggered a taxable event, even if it’s on a cup of coffee. “You could argue that the second-order effect of a de minimis tax exemption would be better create the conditions that have a virtuous cycle of adoption.” Bitcoin faces several several payment-use-case adoption hurdles, but excluding small purchases from capital gains tax could support a real shift among merchants, according to David Zell (@DavidZell_), co-founder and president of the Bitcoin Policy Institute.

“Washington hated this.” Pushing for a de minimis tax exemption for Bitcoin was an uphill battle on Capitol Hill, according to David Zell (@DavidZell_), co-founder and president of the Bitcoin Policy Institute. Why? He says bipartisan pushback centered on concerns that it would cost the government “a lot of money,” while academic research indicates otherwise.

The McRib is coming back as early as 10/27 in select McDonald's restaurants across the US. The legend says that the McRib first came to life to compensate for... a McNugget shortage issue! Apparently, McNuggets had become so wildly popular that our supply could not keep up with demand. So we needed a new recipe with another protein to give us a bit of time to bring in more McNuggets. The McRib was created IN 1981 by René Arend, a Luxembourgish-American chef who became our very first executive "chef". What was a temporary solve quickly became a cult classic, with fans begging for its return every year. Funny enough, over the years, the McRib has found new meaning online within the crypto community, as some claim Bitcoin tends to perform well after the McRib makes a comeback, particularly in 2017, 2020, 2021. The joke reached its peak in December 2024 when Bitcoin broke $100,000 for the first time in history on the exact same day the McRib returned to menus. Welcome back, Legend!

SLIPSTREAM UPDATE: It's been over a month since the last multisig transaction was executed using Slipstream's private mempool service. We're happy to see that efforts to execute private mempool transactions out of multisig wallets has stalled, suggesting limited need for what we believe may have been attempts to recover funds in the wake of the @COLDCARDwallet hack. Given this information, we plan to resume Slipstream's normal fees for service beginning at 9am EST on Tuesday, October 27th. We're grateful to everyone who helped with recovery efforts during this time — especially the teams at @unchained @AnchorWatch and @Wizardsardine, with special thanks to @PortlandHODL, the creator of Slipstream, for his support 🫡

BitVM bridges unlock greater programmability and payments use cases for Bitcoin, but they currently rely on elliptic curve operations, which aren't secure in a post-quantum world. At @tabconf, @AlpenLabs Research Engineer Christian Lewe (@uncomputab1e) explained why the infrastructure startup is researching post-quantum alternatives for their garbled circuits bridge: "Groth16 is state of the art. It's great. Everybody loves this... but it's not post-quantum secure, so we cannot use it." Full quantum resistance on Bitcoin's base layer will likely require a soft fork. But teams are prepping now to ensure BitVM bridges are ready for a full post-quantum solution when that day comes. Full presentation to follow TABConf soon.

For nearly a decade, @tabconf has served as a technical institution for the Bitcoin development space. At MARA Foundation, we’re thankful to have participated in its final year — and an unforgettable afterparty. Extra gratitude for Slipstream lead maintainer @peterktodd and BitVM creator @robin_linus for their discussions on Slipstream and its use for creative Bitcoin development and R&D 🙏🙏 We’ll never forget the friends we made along the way 😉

“The Fundamental Law of Bitcoin Script: even the weirdest quirk eventually becomes a feature.” Bitcoin script wizard @robin_linus describes his “abuse of Bitcoin Script” for the creation of Binohash — a covenant-emulation technique, enabling technologies like @starkware’s Quantum Safe Bitcoin. Binohash requires the use of nonstandard transactions, relying on @MARA Slipstream to execute the quirkiest of quirky scripts 😉

At @tabconf, Slipstream lead maintainer and veteran Bitcoin Core contributor Peter Todd (@peterktodd) discussed OpenTimestamps, which he created, and its use for “carbon-dating data” on Bitcoin. Carlos Toriello (@carlostoriello), CEO of Simple Proof, additionally shared how he’s using the protocol to create permanent, tamper-proof timestamps for digital documents and records — especially in judicial, legal and political settings where tamperproof evidence is of most critical importance.

As AI introduces new threats to Bitcoin’s ecosystem, independent developers are using those same tools to investigate, test, and secure infrastructure. Speaking to a crowded audience during the Red Team panel at @tabconf, AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton highlighted the importance of community-driven security research: "No one's coming to help us. We all just started doing this stuff because we care about Bitcoin, we wanted to start doing something, and I think it's cool that Bitcoin has these organic immune responses that come step in to help people out." From left, panelists and Red Team heroes include: @brian_trollz, @reardencode, @Rob1Ham, @PortlandHODL, @KLoaec, @stutxo

At @tabconf, @januszg_, CEO and co-founder of LX Research Labs, points to what he describes as a key limitation of Bitcoin privacy protocols: shielded pools currently rely on trusted, federated pegs because their complex zero-knowledge transactions cannot be verified natively. "Because the transaction types are not executable in script, you have to rely on a peg, and that peg has to be able to verify kind of the state of the shielded network." To better address points of centralization, he highlighted the Great Script Restoration (GSR). Reactivating legacy opcodes originally disabled by Satoshi Nakamoto would allow developers to embed advanced logic directly into Bitcoin script, he said, ultimately creating trust-minimized infrastructure for these shielded systems without nascent cryptography.
