I went through a phase where I’d often put on Bon Iver to help fall asleep, and now whenever Re: Stacks comes on shuffle I go full Pavlov’s dog and start nodding off

I’ve been noodling on this one for awhile, so I’m excited to finally see it out in the world! I wrote a piece for Open Banker on algorithmic fairness in lending decisions, focused on a simple question with a not-so-simple answer: how should we measure fairness?

I talk through different approaches to measuring fairness, discuss the thorny normative questions that underpin this question, and offer some considerations for lenders and regulators when designing disparate impact testing processes openbanker.beehiiv.com/p/alg…

I would also like to note that I switched to the new cherry blossom metro card mid-March so this is missing my Jan, Feb, and part of March rides

Not my area of expertise, but this seems like a huge policy win. DC started subsidizing child care workers’ wages by ~$10k/yr, which has led to significantly reduced turnover, better care, and more slots open for kids. Financed by a tax on those making >$250k

This is very cool. An old segregation barrier that used to separate our town from a neighboring town was taken down and replaced with a memorial sculpture (and a park to come). The sculpture is of two hands lifting the barrier so residents of the two towns can walk freely beneath
A reminder of Route 1’s segregated past has been replaced by a powerful and inspirational symbol of racial reconciliation between two towns: @BrentwoodMd, which was historically white, and @n_brentwood, founded by Black Civil War veterans bit.ly/4eKH03d @wamu885 @NPR

Until recently, cystic fibrosis was a debilitating disease with a life expectancy of ~35 years. Then researchers developed a breakthrough treatment that lets patients live a normal lifespan. Doctors describe it as the biggest breakthrough since HIV drugs in the 90’s. Incredible!

People who previously thought they had just a few years to live can now have kids, pursue new careers, start dating, live lives that were previously unattainable. Make-A-Wish removed CF from its eligibility list because the outlook is so much better now
