Task-sharing in mental health (i.e. having non-specialists be the focal point of caregiving) is a proven strategy in mental health care. An under appreciated aspect of task-shared programs is the profound effect they have on the counsellors themselves. We witness this everyday!
We set up Khushee Mamta ("Happy motherhood"), a community-based mental health program, to address the high burden of depression and suicide among young pregnant women and new mothers in rural India. An unexpected outcome has been the empowerment of our counsellors!

I work with an incredible team bringing mental health care to vulnerable women in India. The work depends on local women we recruited and trained as mental health counselors. To celebrate them, we'll be sharing their stories over the coming weeks. These women are world changers!
