Psych Drug Withdrawal, Combat Veteran, Vanlifer, in the movie @medicatingnorm1

Welcome. I wasn’t expecting so many new people here today. I’m an Army veteran, social worker, and survivor of psychiatric medication harm. Today I educate about withdrawal, informed consent, nervous system healing, and recovery. Healing is possible.

I think people are not aware of how much mis-information is propagated about this class of medications. I remember being taught to say this to patients: that the increase in suicidality is caused by an increase in energy before an improvement in mood. What studies show is simply an increase in suicidality when people are given these medications compared to placebo. How many people have been talked into taking these medications because of the repetition of these talking points by prescribers?
Who Are the Real Purveyors of Medical Misinformation? One of the most troubling things about psychiatry is how speculative explanations for drug harms become established facts through sheer repetition. Take the claim that SSRIs can increase suicidality because they restore a depressed person’s energy before improving their mood, supposedly giving them the motivation to act on existing suicidal thoughts. This is routinely presented as though it’s an established scientific explanation. It isn’t. It’s a longstanding hypothesis for which convincing empirical evidence is lacking. A 2009 review in Psychiatric Services examined this very theory and found no consistent evidence supporting it. Yet rather than acknowledging that these drugs can themselves produce adverse psychological reactions, including agitation and akathisia, we’re offered a reassuring story about patients getting better. It’s a striking example of how a superficially plausible sounding hypothesis can become received wisdom when it conveniently distracts from uncomfortable truths about drug harm. Just because something is repeated as fact by someone in a white coat doesn’t make it any more true than any other forms of misinformation we hear online. And when we see it we should call it out.

Being a patient who was medically traumatized has a lot of challenges, many life-threatening. Reintegration back into life, society itself, is just but two without a map or a mentor. Read: angiepeacock.substack.com/p/…

We applaud the UK’s MHRA for implementing these long-overdue measures to inform patients of the risks of suicidality when initiating antidepressant treatment or adjusting dosages, as well as the risk of persistent sexual dysfunction. We urge the U.S. @FDA to follow suit and, alongside other @HHSGov agencies, prioritize helping those who have already been harm. Years-long sufferers of PSSD @PSSDNetwork and protracted withdrawal deserve acknowledgment, answers, and, most importantly, effective treatments.
The MHRA is introducing a series of new measures to strengthen how risks associated with antidepressant medicines are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Read the full drug safety update here: brnw.ch/21x6qlr

I think it tells a lot about the MH professionals when ppl find help outside the medical model. If, instead of reacting w/ curiosity, you immediately say, “It’s alternative quackery!”, perhaps you really don’t want people to get help. You want them to get help you approve of.

Someone just suggested I was dangerous for suggesting someone could “heal” from “mental illness.” I think it’s dangerous to tell people they’ll never “heal” and will be on meds for the rest of their lives.

Not many therapists or psychiatrists have a clue how a person could actually “heal”. Their job is to manage symptoms not look at the person’s context, root cause, or other factors like diet and lifestyle that can make a person miserable.

This is certainly the most consequential paper published in child and adolescent psychiatry for the last few years. It shows that the meta-analyses that current child psychiatry guidelines rely on to recommend fluoxetine for depression were skewed by an unbelievable trial (n=40) in Iran which found an effect 15 times larger than the average. When this trial is removed all meta-analyses find the same as a recent Cochrane analysis which found 'small and unimportant differences.' The flawed meta-analyses by Zhou and @cipriani in the @TheLancet and Lancet Psychiatry need to be corrected. And guideline committees need to update their guidance in the context of the harms of these drugs including withdrawal effects, sexual effects and agitation/akathisia and suicidality in a minority of youths exposed to them. The wages of an iatrogenic condition. There is no "treatment-resistant depression" without ineffective antidepressants.
The VA is now recruiting veterans with treatment-resistant depression (TRD)—including those with or without comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder—for a Phase 3 trial of Compass Pathways’ proprietary synthetic psilocybin formulation, COMP360. 🔗👇

I’m going to Burning Man to be the feral, unapologetic, authentic human fucking being that I am. I will probably not come back the same because I never do. I definitely won’t be on X while there. ✌🏼

By and far, the people I meet or who find me, come because of the lack of understanding in the medical field about physiological dependence. It’s sad really. Then patients are left to taper on their own because that’s safer than trusting their doctor with their taper.

The person who helped me figure out how to taper Cymbalta, back in 2012, was a dog trainer. She knew more about it than my doctor and the ER and I got off it successfully using the bead method she taught me.

Patients often wonder what they can do to help bring safer deprescribing. All should report their adverse drug reactions and problems deprescribing to FDA via Medwatch Reporting. FDA is taking them seriously, reading them, and contacting patients. See link in comments below.

Pure intention heard today: “I want to reach my full potential. I feel my medication is preventing me from doing that.” Psychiatrist: “You’ll need to stay on meds the rest of your life for your condition.” Patient found a new psych.

After Burning Man, I’ve decided to take a break from 1:1 coaching in the deprescribing space and focus on writing what I have learned in the almost 5 years I’ve supported people. It’s a lot. It’s important. I feel honored to have watched so much suffering and healing.

I’m going to continue working with 5 longer term clients who are right in the thick of intensity. My groups will remain on. Everything else is going to be paused probably including social media. I need quiet and space. The time is now.

I hope to contribute in my own way to the lexicon of what we know and what we don’t know. There is such a lack of science, I can only offer pattern recognition, observations, what listening can do.
