In Uvalde, where I’ve been since Tuesday, people woke at 1 a.m. to a blaring tornado alert. Many walked out of hotel rooms, greeting each other and craning skyward. Lightning came like machine gun fire. Rain pounded and wind rippled over the pool, but the tornado never formed.
