👏 Three proud moments in one: congratulations to Vittoria Bellato and Tina van Loon, both Lars Påhlman Award winners at this year's ESCP Annual Coloproctology Meeting in Prague!
Both mothers presented their outstanding work with their new-born little ones close by 👶 Could this become selection criteria for future meetings?! Congratulations to both Tina and Vittoria on both counts, award-winning research and the miracle that is birth.
A wonderful example of how excellence in surgery and motherhood can thrive together. 💙
well done Vittoria, Tina and of course the wonderful Alice Gori from the whole ESCP family! 🎉

Amazing study! That is why colectomy for constipation is NOT the way to go 👈🏻 #constipation #microbiome
Mayo Clinic researchers discovered that chemical signals produced by gut bacteria work together to control intestinal movement. The findings could point to new microbiome-based treatment approaches, with potential implications for IBS-related constipation. mayocl.in/4y9VpyL

A lot of sensationalism and discussion this past week of whether AI will replace doctors.
Here’s a perspective as someone who is entering my 20th year as a Thoracic Surgery Attending in practice and embarked on a surgical career after medical school 30 years ago:
▪️If you define the doctor-patient relationship solely as a series of tasks, then yes, automation and tools such as AI will replace doctors.
🔹However, if the doctor-patient relationship is a longitudinal partnership you make with a patient and their loved ones, that is unique, patient-centered, and delivers extraordinary service, then there is an opportunity as a doctor to both embrace technology and make a difference in the lives of people & communities in need.
I’ve had the extraordinary privilege of building clinical practices in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain West. I did my surgical training in the Midwest.
Some things change. Others don’t.
Yes, there are a lot of problems in healthcare. Yes, we can always do better. But this is an important and incredible time in history. We have the ability to connect and learn on a scale our ancestors could not have even imagined. And that continuous learning can be translated in record time to better care.
Do the work. Embrace the technology that helps our patients (which is a very high standard of excellence). Stay engaged. Welcome civil discourse and debate.
Build a better world for us all.

🧵 on the upcoming disappearance of Chromic and Gut sutures (at least from Ethicon). We’re told these sutures may be gone forever by September.
Only a few surgeons use these fast-absorbing sutures, but for those who do, we’ll go over an alternative.

One of the biggest misconceptions about #burnout is that it's either an institutional problem or an individual problem.
It's both.
In this conversation on #IntentionalSurgeon, Dr. Najjia Mahmoud & I discuss an important distinction.

Thank you @slsteinmd1 for the conversation and bringing awareness to global surgery, women’s health and fistula! @dubaicolorectal @HalabiMd @drtracyhull @katherinehu @ClevelandClinic
The most sustainable impact happens when we stop assuming we know the answer & by asking the question. Meaningful #globalsurgery is about listening, collaborating & asking how we can truly be of service.

At @ASCRS_1 2026, Dr. @LilianaBordei explains why pelvic floor surgery requires honest patient conversations, realistic expectations, and a focus on improving quality of life—not always finding a definitive cure.
