Something happened that is causing me to un-pin this for a few days.
More to come. For now, introducing what will be… my Old TV Soundsystem.
I’ve been threatening this on here since at least 2024, irl since early 2019.
This is happening.
Weekends Never Ended. Feat Old CD Soundsystem, DJ Heidy P, shirehead, Friendly Frogs Freak Show, + TBA
Saturday Dec 5, Bar Le Ritz PDB.
This night is incredibly personal to me. The last time I headlined a show I played drums. I may have sung in choirs, choruses, and karaoke, but frontmanning a 12-song set is a whole ‘nother beast.
I’ve been training for it. I started working with a singing coach since January, and it shows in the game tape. I used to swallow the hardest parts, not confident I could hit them. Now my body knows what it’s doing. My hit rate continues its climb—from .300 to .500, now .850 with 2 months to go—but even when I’m off it’s close and compelling. This is Anglo Montreal, I’ve got that Ken Carter in me.
The shamanistic part of frontmanning has been especially tough. Here I’ve had to trust my vastly more-experienced bandmates (one has toured on at least 3 continents; I’d open prediction markets betting you’ve heard songs he’s played on). We started the year with 1 or 2 sessions a month, slowly putting together sketches of all of the parts for our 12-song set. In the summer we upped cadence to “most weeks” and started jamming through the songs, lingering and noodling around on each song part. This month we’re up to 2x weekly, working each song to stage readiness. Next month we’ll keep up the pace to work on stamina and transitions. It’s becoming more natural to conjure and channel the music now that the group’s properly behind me.
This is also the first “rock show” I’ve booked since that one I headlined. I was 16. Back then our scene lived in house parties and community center shows; as underage kids no real venues would book us. So I rented a venue, booked 2 other bands from our scene (from different grades and schools, to sell more tix ;) and one touring group (more differentiation). I have my bias but it made sense for us to headline, we were one of the two mature groups on the bill and had just put out an EP of originals. The night was a hit and spawned many more like it. My band broke up soon after tho :(
From the start of this project I’ve wanted this show to feel like that one. First and foremost it had to be a lineup I’d want to see. I am so so ✨ so ✨ delighted to present a night with Friendly Frogs and shirehead supporting. They are my two favourite local groups. They consistently put on extremely fun shows and are an absolute joy to watch and dance to. A dear friend (and frequent concert pal!) just returned to France after 2 years here; as we were reminiscing on our favourite nights together these two came up repeatedly, more than any other act we’d seen. I am purposely making this hard for me. They are both tough acts to follow. I am nervous. I am excited.
And then the dance party. Lmfao. I booked and promoted these with a friend for a brief spell around ‘08 / ‘09, so when the venue asked me to program until 3am (or else finish by 10) I knew just who to call. Heidy is sunshine personified. She’s on her second, maybe third renewal of an O-1 visa. Living in NYC. As a DJ. Remarkable. I used to flirt with her shamelessly in our 20s. I still do. When we met she had a weekly DJ night with her boyfriend at the best dive bar dance floor. She was impossibly cool with impeccable taste and inimitable style. Still is. She is a party of a person and a dear dear friend. I’m so grateful that even before this was gonna go to 3am, before she agreed to spin for us, that she was going to come so I could perform for her, for once 🥲
When I told the lead of a local band I enjoy about this project earlier this year, I described it as quixotically self-indulgent. Gesturing to the room they had just played, they asked “And this is?”

You can just do things. You can also choose to not do things.

Hey @grok make me the schematic, BOM, assembly manual, and user
manual for an imax 70mm projector. Make no mistakes.
Replying to @kinglycrow
these aren't new problems! is there a single person at Facebook/Google who understands the whole codebase and all the various distributed systems at play?

throwback to the time I took hours out of my day to decipher the rural juror finale song and make this karaoke-style lyric video and then never posted it bc it was strictly for my own personal enjoyment (until now bc I'm philanthropic like that)

In Québec, we don’t say “He’s not the sharpest tool in the box”, we say “He’s not the most defrosted Pogo in the box” and I think that’s beautiful
