Livestock #farmers are looking for ways to reduce the incidence of #nitrogen leaching into groundwater from manure. Applying manure to land planted with #CoverCrops is another practice that can help with nitrogen management. canr.msu.edu/news/cover_crop…
Interesting take, though maybe lays more blame for the current structure of US ag on crop insurance. I do appreciate laying out a big vision for what ag could look like.

Interesting effort to invest in infrastructure to support mid-sized farms. Not tied directly to environmental outcomes, but still important for ag diversity
This plenary was so good. The environmental community can gain so much by working to incorporate as many perspectives as possible. The expansiveness of Indigenous land ethics is so mind opening and empowering. #issrm2019

Every time I hear/read “we will educate farmers” I cringe a bit. I think about how important the synergy is between research, Extension, farmers, consultants etc. We learn alongside each other - it’s much more productive that way. At least that’s my approach in #soilhealth

In case you missed it: our Farm Manager, Brook Wilke, wrote a blog post for the online edition of The Farmer's Exchange about integrating annuals into a grazing system and making the most out of the investment! #MSUKBS #agriculture farm.kbs.msu.edu/2019/04/29/…
Worrying times for agriculture, but there are opportunities for innovation as well. Farmers just need to be empowered to keep being creative.
Former secretary of ag Tom Vilsack lays out a bold vision at this morning's #climatesmartag hearing: "The time has come for the dairy industry specifically and the agriculture industry generally to look for creative ways to get to a net zero emissions operation."
Emphasizes the need for many stakeholders to get on the same page with conservation. We need to engage those with economic and social resources to support farmers in advancing sustainability.
Nebraska farmer Matt Rezac says farm economy makes it impossible for some farmers to upgrade conservation practices, bankers won't let them. "If you do’t have the money to spend you can’t keep moving forward' @SenateAgGOP @SenateAgDems

Our VP @TimBoring was on CNN today talking about impacts of trade tensions with China on Michigan ag. Tim spoke about the state of trade and the need for open markets. #tradewar #tariffs #AgricultureNews
The new Farm Bill will cut spending on working lands programs, especially CSP. While these cuts are a big loss, there are some bright spots too, esp. more targeting and big gains for RCPP.

Interesting country index of food system sustainability. US has some work to do, especially on nutrition (diet composition and obesity esp) and environment (water quality, diversity).

Pretty great data visualization here. The numbers here really put warming trends into a context I think people can understand.

Most of my work is on environmental side of sustainability, but rural broadband is a really important issue for the social and economic side of sustainability.
Living in rural MI for 5 years, we have gotten by on DSL with roughly 4 mbps, which is just enough to get Netflix and functional web access. But big file downloads/uploads get saved for the office (like backing up photos).
Paul Hawken's book Drawdown is an excellent resource for those who want to look at climate change solutions beyond just focusing on energy (which of course is a critical part, but not the whole story).

Super important report on the prospects for food system sustainability. This weeks IPCC rep't was obviously important, but food systems often do not get enough attention given how critical they are to humanity.
