Introducing Fern, Mirendil’s first model: pretrained from scratch, with up to 10M tokens of context!
That’s ~0.5M lines of code (roughly Megatron-LM scale) or days of an agent’s work, all in context at once.
Its first version, Fern 0.1, had a short round of post-training 🚢

So much sw today doesn’t care much about perf. It just feels sluggish. And everyone seems to have accepted it.
Except when a new product shows how it can be done. Eg Bun for building, Linear for issues, Craft Docs for editing… and look at this Superlogical demo for tmux:
Quick Superlogical demo to end the week. This demo is just of the basic functionality, but I want to highlight just how FAST it is. There's a WHOLE lot more functionality already present and coming but I wanted to keep the demo short. But seriously, check out that speed.
I'm showing the macOS app here and I get asked a lot so let me just say up front: its not macOS only. We're still figuring out exactly what platforms will be stable enough for the initial public release, but we're working on others. In particular, the web interface is very functional but I'll demo that another time (or someone else will).
This is also all showing off the architecture I previously talked about for terminal multiplexing which is significantly different from other mainstream multiplexers: this is all a custom binary protocol where the server is maintaining N replica distributed terminal state machines. It works!
Tons of hard work going into this by the team @almonk @dizzyup @pearkes. Hope we can bring you something you can use soon. ❤️ Happy to answer questions in the replies.

Mind boggling to me that I can make a thing faster and there's always people that ask "but why?" What kind of mentality is that? The pursuit of excellence does not need justification. Also, I find in so many cases, we can't know the impact of an improvement until we do it.
For example, one I've talked about before: Ghostty's high IO throughput has enabled terminal program (emulator and TUI) fuzzing at a speed thats incomparably fast to prior solutions. This has resulted in upstream patches to resolve issues in popular projects like btop, tmux, and more.
Speed enabled that anecdotally example that lifted the tides of adjacent communities that don't rely on Ghostty technology at all. I didn't predict this.
Make things better because they can be better and let the results naturally play out.

This site is a beautiful read. It walks you through an ordinary apartment and lets the past tell you how extraordinary it all still is.

After more than a year of labor, my book 𝘏𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘔𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴 has launched!

I'm so proud of this and grateful to the many people who helped along the way, reading early drafts, challenging my ideas, and encouraging me to do it, and the 750 people who preordered the book, trusting that it would be worth it.
All your feedback and ideas are welcome, as usual!

This is a really deep look at how a Tudor watch is made. So many steps, so many industrial processes, so much hand work. Pretty incredible to see what goes into this sort of thing.
