Unprecedented number of journalists detained and harassed during the protest at Delhi today. Many of them from legacy and international media. I was pushed and shoved while covering detentions as well. Huge concern for whatever remains of press freedom in India.

Volunteers from civil society organizations spent a week in Okhla's two booths and found out 100 voters at their address who are not on Delhi's draft roll. As many people attended their public hearing on Sunday. Same crowd was missing in special camps of the area @CeodelhiOffice

AISA has shared a video from Parliament Street police station in New Delhi where a delegation, including lawyers, reached to inquire about student leader Neha Bora. @aisa_official_ says the police has refused to meet the delegation. Bora was ‘singled out’ and detained during a protest march in central Delhi earlier in the day. AISA says there has been no contact with Neha since afternoon - and they are unaware of her whereabouts.
AISA says Neha Bora was ‘singled out’ and taken away by Delhi police; they do not know her whereabouts - and she does not have her phone with her.

Journey of a slander. It was the BJP IT cell which began asking how anyone with a phone and a mic can be called a journalist. This was around Oct 2. Fews day later it was used by Delhi police. Then Godi anchors used this line on TV. Now the Chief Justice.

It is 10:40 pm at night. Delhi Police Parliament Street Thana is not letting a delegation enter the police station. We are asking where are @neha_aisa and @abhijeet_dipke ? How can they detain a woman beyond sunset? If she is arrested they must disclose the details.

RT @AshutoshRanka: Detained before Abhijeet Dipke could even unfurl the Tiranga? Is this what patriotism has come to? …
Strange things happen in the state of UP 🌚
#UPSIRFiles 30 consecutive serial numbers. All marked DEAD in a single booth in Mughalsarai, UP. In Mughalsarai, Booth No. 53, serial numbers 1–30 are all marked “Dead” in the records analysed. Even more striking: 22 out of 30 (73.3%) are aged just 20–39. It's strange that so many young voters end up marked dead in a single booth.

Today our petition, challenging the requirement that voters deleted during Delhi SIR should fill Form 6, was mentioned in the Supreme Court. The petition highlights that- - Over 47 lakh voters deleted under the Absent, Shifted, Dead or Duplicate (ASDD) category, have no other mechanism of applying for restoration of their name on the voter list other than filling Form 6, which is meant only for first time voters. Giving a false declaration is punishable by imprisonment of up to 1 year. - The changes made to Form 6 & 8 (additional declaration) through the SIR guidelines is illegal, as the statutory process for making such additions/ amendments has not been followed. - The prescription of different forms for applying for name inclusion during SIR and non-SIR periods is legally not tenable. The petition has has been filed as an IA in our ongoing Delhi SIR matter. The CJI led bench agreed to hear the matter on October 28 and indicated that they will pass an order addressing the concerns.
Anjali Bhardwaj & Amrita Johri have moved the Supreme Court against requiring voters excluded in SIR to use Form 6, arguing it forces them to falsely declare they are first time applicants. Prashant Bhushan will mention the matter tomorrow. The petition states that 47,56,722 voters, 32.78% of Delhi’s pre-SIR electorate were excluded from the draft roll under the Absent, Shifted, Dead or Duplicate (ASDD) category. To seek restoration, they must submit Form 6, which requires them to declare that they are applying for inclusion for the first time. The petition argues that this forces previously registered voters to make a factually incorrect declaration, potentially exposing them to penalties for false declarations under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. It also challenges the additional declaration required with Forms 6 and 8 during SIR, arguing that it was introduced without following the legally mandated rule making procedure. It questions why different requirements apply during SIR and non-SIR periods.

Remember Faizan, the 23-year-old who was beaten to death by the Delhi police during the 2020 riots while being forced to sing the national anthem? His siblings have now been struck off the voter rolls because they’re more than six and mapped to the same parent. “Our brother was forced to prove his Indianness until his last breath. Now, after his death, the rest of us are having to prove it by running around with documents to show that we are in fact Indian,” his sister told me. Reporting for @newlinesmag

Reminder: CEO Uttar Pradesh has not filed FIRs against the people who tried mass deletion of Muslim voters. But, after we detected them, it did acknowledge. among the 200+ cases, one was a non-existent "Reshma" who attempted mass deletions. Has also not explained how 80k+people were deleted for no reason or reasons such as "A, B, C" written down. We aren't done yet. We have more to reveal... #SIR #ECI.
Still calling the report misleading and called it so in our rebuttal also. The rebuttal is available on our X handle. Some of the figures arrived at in the report are not correct. eg one figure is off by 24%. The deadly mix of preconceived notions, biased approach, faulty assumptions and botched homework always leads to erroneous conclusion. The SIR -2026 conducted in UP is an exercise that we are proud of. It was conducted in a fair and transparent way.

One detainee was called in. Then came the screams. Another followed, and the screams came again. In the pitch-dark van, protesters were allegedly punched, kicked and beaten, then shoved into cramped, grille-enclosed compartments. My story for Alt News- altnews.in/aur-nahi-marenge-…

Now that Mary ben has been deployed by the PMO, we know that BJP wants the official narrative to be that the protests are foreign-funded. One can already see that there is an attempt to form that narrative on social media, and expect that it will be propagated further by mainstream media to the hilt now.

Reporting is not a crime, and journalists should not be detained for performing their duties. SFLC.in has recorded over 50 journalists who were detained while reporting on the ongoing protests. The list of these journalists can be found here: docs.google.com/document/d/1… @DigipubIndia @IndEditorsGuild @indiafreespeech @tajmahalfoxtrot @riotsjain @RSF_inter @dhanyarajendran @adrijabose
This is an exhaustive list of accounts from journalists who were either detained, assaulted, or had their equipment damaged by the Delhi Police. There are around 30 accounts in total, with direct quotes from almost all of them. thenewsminute.com/news/over-…

Since 2018, I have worked as a journalist. No security personnel has ever asked me for a PIB card on field. The police have been told to do this. To disregard media workers and harass them. The police never act on their own accord. They follow instructions that come from the top.
In 12 years of reporting in India, I was offered a PIB card multiple times but never needed one. I covered the 2019 CAA protests and reported and lived in Kashmir, never once asked for it by police or the army. This is unreal.

Even ToI is reporting on journalists being picked up by the Delhi Police. With pictures. But CJI doesn't read newspapers, it seems.

Hello @DCPNewDelhi, What more proof do you want? You can see the same goons taking out sticks stored in the car.
Lol. No criminal records? Both these goons were sitting inside the same car.
