If Joe Biden really wanted to shake things up, he could drop a political nuke by resigning on January 5th. Here’s the play: Kamala Harris becomes the 47th President of the United States...

people think they have "beliefs" and it's just the residue of some psyop some guy did 20 years ago for dumb political reasons
tfw you hear something sketchy so often you're wondering if you should write something up on it but it's literally already on the wikipedia list of common misconceptions en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o…

do trad ppl who want to make civilization return to 1950's values not realize that trad culture is unstable? The thing that came after the 1950's was the 1960s, and it happened for a reason.

So happy to learn this is not true because 90% of meat and veggies are better with a lil char on it. I was still cooking it that way, but I guess I'd just decided I was okay with dying for it.

This is absolutely right, and I'm going to signal-boost it. Exceptional achievement almost always has three legs - innate talent, hard work, and sheer bloody luck.

Good take. I'm genuinely surprised Feynman could be so mistaken. Was he surrounded by academics his entire life? The most accurate explanation for exceptional people is almost always [talent+hard work+opportunity]. Emma Navarro and Jess Pegula are good examples: athletic + hard worker + billionaire dads = US Open semi-finals. Neglecting the impact of any of the three is usually in err, although occasionally there could be exceptional cases where 2/3 is enough.

my problem with “manners” is that some are ways to be considerate and others are just class signifiers, but the people raised with them seem incapable of distinguishing which is which. “don’t show up to things empty handed” is a display of abundance not of decency. i detest that.
a lot of people lack basic manners and decency and think it makes them cool and edgy. learn table manners, don’t show up to things empty handed, write cards, talk to your neighbors, hold the door for people, etc. you don’t even have to be THAT nice just be considerate.

"ACKCHUALLY, Frankenstein was the scientist's name, not the monster's" FACT CHECK: Since the monster calls Victor Frankenstein "father" in the book and Frankenstein is a last name, "Frankenstein" is the only reasonable last name that the creature could possibly have

People often object to these sorts of anecdotes as exceptions. Obviously in a country of millions of people, even very rare things will happen more than 0 times, and the media will pick up on these rare cases and spread them all over the news. This is a good thing to keep in mind in general, but seems almost certainly false when it comes to police misconduct. The clue is to look at what happens to the officers afterwards. If it were just "a few bad eggs" in an otherwise almost entirely well-meaning police force, we'd still see stories like this in the media, but the officers involved would usually be fired shortly afterwards, as the rest of their department would be horrified. Instead, the officers in question consistently get off with only minor disciplinary action, or none at all. This proves it's a systemic issue, not just survivorship bias. And note that this is the case *even when the misconduct is widely reported and causes terrible PR for the department*. We should therefore expect the police to care *even less* about misconduct that does not get picked up by the media.
man reports his dad missing. police suspect he killed him based on vibes. after he doesnt confess after 16 hours of interrogation, they tell him theyre gonna euthanize his dog, and bring in the dog "to say goodbye." he confesses the dad's alive the whole time

Chernobyl's greatest ecological impact remains the mass hysteria that happened after the accident

People say they are not ‘obsessed with Israel’ — that they only defend Palestinians because “it is the worst genocide ever”. And yet, I don’t believe they know the name of Syria’s president, responsible for more than 500,000 people killed, including many Palestinians. Do they know the name of China’s president, in charge of holding over a million Uyghur Muslims in refugee camps? Or the name of IRI’s president, responsible for the murder of so many Iranians? And if it’s ‘because their countries support Israel’ do they know how many civilians were killed in post 9/11 American and UK wars in the Middle East? (Way over 30k, try 20 times that number.) When you know the Israeli government more than your own, it is not genuine concern for human rights, but rather selective outrage driven by antisemitism.

I suspect that in a sane culture, people would notice inability to smell much earlier, because interactions would be grounded in experiencing an actual sense of things, not parroting / playing along maybe they'd even be actively cultivating their taste in sensual domains

(well, not literally "never happened", but few enough times that the combined cost of all taxi rides of all times it happened was still several orders of magnitude less than the cost of a second car)
