Business and labor don’t always agree. On permitting reform, they do.
The heads of @PAChamber and @420Steamfitters are urging Congress to pass the bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act.
We agree. It’s time for America to build again. bit.ly/4By6Pi6

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, gets people addicted like a duck, has a duck-like counterparty playing the role of the house, and is even less regulated than a duck when to comes to gambling harm, then I don’t see why I should care if the plumage looks a little different.
Yes, a bet and a trade often look similar.
But how they work is fundamentally different.
A sportsbook sets the odds and takes the other side of your bet. Prediction markets are markets, where buyers and sellers compete to discover and produce efficient prices and enable important public benefits.
What the market is about can change, but the structure doesn't.
My op-ed on prediction markets and regulation:
Corrections staffing is declining even as incarcerated populations remain relatively steady, putting pressure on state and federal prison systems.
Safe Inside, an Arnold Ventures grantee, is examining the scope of the problem and bringing together people working to make prisons safer and healthier for both staff and incarcerated people.

> Lower the hard costs of construction
> Streamline the development process to make it faster, simpler, and more transparent

Four in five voters hold large hospital systems responsible for high health care prices, according to a new poll from the Alliance for Fair Health Pricing.
As high and rising health care prices continue to put pressure on American families, workers, and employers, we need greater accountability. Strong, effective price transparency is a foundational tool to promote a more competitive, affordable health care system.

While the No Surprises Act protects patients from surprise bills, its arbitration system has generated $22B in costs that will likely continue to grow. Many of these costs stem from large payment awards - with providers winning 80%+ of disputes - and revenue generated for arbiters.
New @statnews reporting raises serious questions about transparency, accountability and health care costs.

High school graduation rates hit 87%, yet reading and math scores keep dropping. When policy rewards the number of graduates rather than actual learning, schools lower the bar to hit the metric.

Getting in line doesn't mean getting built. Just 13% of the capacity submitted to connect to the grid from 2000–2020 was operational by 2025. Permitting reform can help move more projects from the queue to reality.
America has the technologies. America has the projects.
More than 2,060 GW of generation and storage are waiting to connect to the grid, more than the capacity of the entire U.S. power system. The challenge isn't finding projects. It's getting them connected and built.
A stronger electric grid can mean fewer blackouts and lower costs.
Building well-planned, high-capacity transmission helps move electricity where it's needed, especially when demand spikes or extreme weather hits. It also connects communities to low-cost power and reduces costly grid congestion.

🎧 On this week's episode of #ColumbiaEnergyExchange, host @JasonBordoff speaks with @DanielPalken, Director of Infrastructure for Energy & Permitting at @Arnold_Ventures, about the core provisions of Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, and the major objections to it.
Listen now: energypolicy.columbia.edu/da…
There are more than 8,000 energy projects waiting to connect to the grid, but it now takes more than 5 years for the typical project to reach commercial operation.
When energy projects sit in line, families and businesses wait longer for affordable, reliable power. Permitting reform can help bring new energy online faster.
.@CapitoforWV breaks down the bipartisan permitting reform deal on @jenningsshow. The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act would speed up federal reviews, modernize transmission planning, and give permitted projects the certainty they need.
This is exactly the kind of reform America’s energy system demands.
WV @SenCapito updates us on the permitting reform deal that would unleash American energy projects, due to be voted on in November after the election.
