I’m late to this - but very happy to announce this best-paper award winning work with @kevinbryson_ Alek Binion Ahmad Bamba Luca Dovichi Arthur Borem and Blase Ur at #CHI2024
We look at how data scientists make fairness related decisions throughout the DS cycle
🧵
excited that our work designing an algorithmic fairness tool with a new contextual interaction model is being shared with the community (and that it won a best paper award!)

TikTok users feel its algorithm is eerily accurate. But from everything we know about the algorithm, it's a pretty standard recommender system of the kind that every major social platform uses. TikTok's real innovation is something else.

Applying to a CS PhD? You should be aware of graduate application support programs!!
These programs give applicants informal feedback (on statements, etc) from current PhD students before formally applying. Fairly new, but amazing stuff.
I'm tracking them below:

“Diversifying” graduate student cohorts without recruiting, retaining, and promoting faculty of color who work on relevant topics who can teach and advise incoming students is unethical.

I always appreciate those who take time to write out tips for the hidden curriculum of graduate school and faculty life, especially when they do it succinctly. In this vein, I enjoyed the 7 min read on How to (CS) PhD by @JChanenson jakec007.github.io/2022-01-1… 1/n

soo @kellybwagman is at it again with a *brilliant* zine titled "Gender, Power, + Tech!" It's such a crisp distillation of feminist theory and how it applies to all things race / tech / computing...with incredible illustrations to boot. kellybwagman.com/zine

ALT a screenshot of the zine: one page shows a girl sewing clothes and the fabric flows towards her and a professor at a computer coding, to her walking through the gates of a university. The second page shows a polaroid of her and her fellow students next to her trying to figure out stuff at the computer but getting increasingly alienated by all the men around her

OnlyFans would be nothing without the sex workers whose labor built it up into a major platform. Now it’s tossing them aside, and removing a vital source of income from a population of workers who are disproportionately marginalized and have no protections under U.S. labor law

If you're wondering what Google was so terrified of @timnitGebru publishing, I got a copy of the paper. Here's my best summary of what it says.
Thank you to @emilymbender who coauthored the work for sending it my way.

So many amazing points!! After copying like 5 quotes I was going to include in this retweet, I decided to just say: please read it!!!!
it's super trendy these days to talk about teaching ethics to CS students but less trendy to think about what that actually looks like. I wrote down some of my thoughts based on working on the first year of Brown's program -
