AI is coming for econ. Artificial intelligence will force a major push against the endemic (often ideologically or financially motivated) fraud in the social sciences and life sciences

I read Daron Acemoglu's book Why Nations Fail and thought its core thesis was wrong.
Years later, I saw him make bad arguments about AI, and saw the connection with the book. At that point, I knew I had to write something about this.
I explain why Acemoglu is too zero-sum in his thinking and not appreciative enough of the degree to which productivity boosts make everyone wealthier. richardhanania.com/p/daron-a…

Ratatouille is such a great movie because it’s ruthlessly in favor of meritocratic inegalitarianism. “Anyone can cook,” not “everyone can cook.”
The duty of Chef Linguini is to forfeit his arbitrary inherited status as a human and serve to elevate the deserving übermaus Remy.

I think it's becoming rather clear that ALL of mathematics will become possible to formalize rather soon. There are deep implications:
1. Mathematics becomes super interactive. Formalizations make it easy to browse, recombine, and build mathematical proofs from components.
2. Each new idea and paper can be checked much faster. The deep part is meaning and explanation. Validation is almost automatic.
3. Optimization and identification of new proofs can be done partially via agents, and humans can contribute much faster with great new ideas. Proofs from the Book are possible at scale.
4. Scientists and people at large can finally use mathematical artifacts as black boxes with trust and confidence. We can commoditize mathematical theorems.
I think the mathematical enterprise also becomes very gamified. We can clearly see each unproven statement as a concrete goal, identify existing tools and directions, and focus quickly on what's missing. And everyone can contribute, with agents or through understanding.
Soon, new languages and new theories will also develop, but the structure will keep growing steadily, with no mistakes and on fundamentally solid foundations. Hilbert's dream is becoming a reality.
One important caveat: mathematics is by no means trivial now! It's just becoming extremely well-structured and laser-focused. I think the jump in capacity, quality, and scale will be massive. I also hope that our understanding of the big picture will remain solid, because there will be a lot to grasp.

How is it possible that two separate AI labs got the refutation of ETH, one of the most important result in complexity theory on the exact same day(16 Oct)?
“The core algorithm was found on October 16 by an internal Claude research model with 14M output tokens and no human input. Anthropic researchers worked with Claude to improve the presentation, resulting in this paper.”

before capitalism, everyone assumed most people were only good for farming. take them off the fields and you’d have millions of useless mouths to feed. that’s the ai panic word for word: automate cognitive work and you get billions of useless minds
except when farming went from 80% to 2% of people, it didn’t make useless mouths. it made everyone else
we don’t know much about the ambitions of people who’ve never had the means to act on them. people learn what’s realistic, not what would need a team, take years, or feel like someone else’s job. after a while the limits feel like preferences. so when someone says “most people just use ai for emails,” that’s not a fact about people. it’s how small they’ve learned to want
being able to do more will fundamentally change what we want. which is why every prediction built on how people use ai today is far too small

Physics results are deferred to the 5-member Ministry of Truth

The physics collaboration will understand and explain a result that gives a mathematically rigorous existence proof of certain interacting quantum field theories containing gauge fields and fermions in four dimensions, including Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and a unified completion of the Standard Model of particle physics.
As a subproblem, this work also includes a proof of the existence of pure Yang–Mills theory, which is part of the Quantum Yang–Mills Theory Clay Mathematics Institute Millennium Prize problem. These proofs are all formally verified in Lean.
Our models produced a natural language proof for Yang–Mills existence, and then subsequently produced a proof for QCD After the formalization completed, we reached out to David Gross. David will lead a group including Michael Douglas, Arthur Jaffe, Igor Klebanov, and Nikita Nekrasov that will shepherd this work, and we will defer to them on the release of materials.
Gross’s work on asymptotic freedom in Yang-Mills theories helped establish QCD as the theory of the strong interactions and earned him a share of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics. Jaffe formulated the Quantum Yang–Mills Theory Millenium Prize problem with Witten and also envisioned the idea of Millennium Prize problems and co-founded the Clay Mathematics Institute. Douglas has already been a steward of this problem over the last 20 years; Klebanov helped pioneer the application of gauge–string duality to confinement, an important property of QCD, and now directs the Simons Collaboration on Confinement and QCD Strings; and Nekrasov has done groundbreaking work on exact methods for generalizations of Yang–Mills theory.

AGMAI has posted a statement to clarify one aspect of its recent recommendations to AI companies, concerning whether they should nominate specific mathematicians to work on understanding their results. Tl;dr we think it's better if they don't.
