I don’t know how seriously to take this, but it’ll be pretty funny if every security researcher in the US gets pwned using open-weight models, because the frontier US labs wouldn’t give them access to their red-team models.
While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected. Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions. Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent. But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models? We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem. Read the full report: cohere.com/blog/concerning-b…

FT comments never miss. I don’t think I’ve read such a rational analysis of the situation we’re in for a long time.
I've been in France since 2002 and have never seen the streets so violent nor the politics so extreme. From the sacking of the supermarket on my street to the prospect of Présidente Le Pen, here's me @FT including thoughts from 2 French Nobel laureates as.ft.com/r/addcad57-0f9d-4e…

🚨Today, Texas Children’s Hospital has officially launched their Detransition Clinic 🚨 Under the settlement, TCH must provide multidisciplinary detransition-related care FREE OF CHARGE for five years, including endocrinology, surgery, primary care, fertility counseling, mental health services, social work, and speech pathology. I extend my heartfelt gratitude once again to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and my attorneys at the Burke Law Group for their extraordinary dedication, sacrifice, and tireless efforts throughout this fight. Their commitment helped turn a painful and difficult chapter into an opportunity for meaningful change. @KenPaxtonTX @BurkeLawTweets I think of all the detransitioners who have suffered in silence, been dismissed, and fought desperately to have their voices heard. This win is for them. I hope TCH’s admirable effort to fund and launch Americas first detransition clinic becomes a turning point for the entire country. That this clinic is not the exception, but the first of many. Today’s a good day. ❤️ Link⬇️

Your originalism arguments are no match for a hypothetical conversation with a 9-year-old
Well, the first amicus brief supporting the government in Viramontes just hit. The sad and hilarious thing is that this fucking dumpster fire is no less incoherent than the respondents' briefs and other amici on their side.

This is the type of thing that potentially gets new laws passed.

For anyone curious about what it actually looked like to kill a generation of functioning cars, here’s an actual video from 2009 and brief explanation: The dealer first replaces the oil with sodium silicate solution. It’s a clear-ish liquid that crystallizes under extreme heat. As the engine warms up the solution begins to form small abrasive crystals in the oil system that shred the bearing and score the cylinder walls. Within seconds of starting the car you can see smoke billowing from the exhaust, this is the crystals scratching the cylinder walls and leaving small grooves for oil and solution to leak past into the combustion chamber and ignite/evaporate, producing the white smoke. Pretty soon the entire crankcase is full of crystals and freshly shredded metal flakes, the engine seizes. It took about 40 seconds in this video. Some engines reportedly lasted up to 7 minutes, but all were destroyed. That strikes me as sort of sad in a way, like watching a great warrior slowly lose a heroic last stand. Now, this is the part that gets insanely wasteful. These cars were sent to federally approved recycling facilities where they had 180 days to sell the non-engine parts before they were required to prove that they had shred the entire thing into scrap steel. But, in talking to a guy who ran one such facility at the time, he typically just sent them straight to the crusher. The timeframes allotted weren’t long enough to dismantle all of the cars, and even if you could, the marginal prices of the parts was greatly diminished. You cannot sell 1000 transmissions when only 50 went bad that year, they became worthless. So just like that, in order to increase prosperity and save the environment, 677,000 entire running cars and trucks were turned directly into rebar worth a few cents per pound. The entire Obama administration was like a chapter out of atlas shrugged.
Barack Obama was horrible in a million different ways, but he doesn’t get anywhere near the hate he deserves for destroying the used car market for an entire generation. 15-year-old cars with 150,000 miles that should be selling for $3,000 are going for $15,000. It’s abominable. Pure destruction and thievery.

I don’t believe that anyone is actually “smarter” than anyone else. I think that everything on an IQ test is a skill that can be honed.

And this is why the “woke right” exists. When supposedly centrist leaders like Macron can’t provide the rock-bottom core purpose of a government, which is a monopoly on violence, people shop around. Centrists really have no room to complain here. Until you’re all Bukele with Hillary characteristics, you have no claim to the high ground. I have plenty of mutuals who fall into this camp, but my patience is really running out. The state must lock up criminals, secure private property, and deliver necessary public goods without 90% loss to bureaucratic graft (permitting, environmental review, “affordable housing,” etc). If you have no candidates who can do this, you are not the adults in the room. You’re children in oversized suits. You are the ones who don’t recognize the seriousness of the moment and are larping. Where are these Democrats who reject rent control, reject redistribution, want to cut social programs, want to cut red tape, want to execute murderers? You have none. So it’s a choice between right illiberalism and left illiberalism, and that’s an extremely easy choice for a White male net taxpayer.
Paris's top cop advised shop-owners to provide for their own security during this weekend's riots. The rock-bottom, core purpose of government is to protect its citizens. A government that admits it can't do that is a government in defeat. zerohedge.com/geopolitical/p…

Thank god we can find and intercept lost hikers as they mistakenly run away from rescue in dense forest!
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

Honestly, a damn good idea given what the first 24-48 hours of a near peer war will look like. It won’t be nukes- it will be cyberattacks aimed at logistics and comms that will absolutely tear the shit out of US infrastructure. Our military needs to be prepared to go low tech in a hurry.
