My battery capacity has been at 80% for a few months now. My @Apple Care plan (and corresponding free battery replacement if it drops below 80%) expires today. Do we think it drops to 79% tomorrow or waits a week to be polite? 😂🤦🏼‍♀️🙄

(Also, I don’t care what the software says, this phone is definitely not operating at Peak Performance Capability and hasn’t been for quite a while. *SIGH*)

Sidenote, highly recommend getting a UPS (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninte…) for your router and modem, as well as for your parents’ and other family. Parents don’t have power or reliable cell service at the mo’, but every few hours we turn the UPS on and @TachusFiber connects right away.

You don’t need a fancy one either—you can get a basic UPS from Costco, Amazon Basics, etc., for <$100 for a decent-sized battery.

Legit the most useful outage tracker at the moment, because @CenterPoint hasn’t had a map for the past few months. Thank you @BBQBryan for figuring this out, and @Whataburger for having an accurate map in your app!
The Whataburger app works as a power outage tracker, handy since the electric company doesn't show a map. Still nearly 1.9 million power outages.

(I even tried a different fast food restaurant’s app, but it shows every location is open, including the one we know for a fact isn’t. Obviously should have trusted the tried and true Texas brand from the start! 😂)

It's true! We are almost always happy to share our papers (but give us a minute, email can be overwhelming) and provide workarounds for the racket that is academic publishing! Also check out @arxiv and @scihub--they might be there, no email needed!

Jenna's pet portraits are adorable, and her soaps are the only bar soaps I use anymore! She also designs logos and sells meat and eggs. This is a great way to support a small independent farmer! 💙

Earlier today I explained the concept of Milkshake Duck to my mom, and just now she said "You know, like that Marshmallow Hotdog thing from before". 🤣

We are going. For the first time, the @NASA_SLS rocket and @NASA_Orion fly together. #Artemis I begins a new chapter in human lunar exploration.

I did a trial run of this a few months ago and maybe it’s because my dishwasher is 15 years old or because I only run it once a week, but my non-pre-rinsed dishes did not come clean. Are there real folks out there who manage to do this successfully?
Seriously: You don't need to pre-rinse your dishes. @Wirecutter ran 17 different dishwashers loaded with crusty, stubborn food stains. Even with zero pre-rinsing, each machine almost always did a fantastic job. nyti.ms/3VviMQC

Emma has her priorities in order. 😻😻😻 Stay safe, everyone in Ian’s path! And if you’re local and don’t already follow @chswx, fix that now! Best source for hype-free updates and useful RTs!
We still have plenty of supplies as you prepare for #HurricaneIan. Re-suppply trucks are expected to arrive today & tomorrow. Emma fully prepped and ready for a Lowcountry Hurricane Boil. @TrueValue @chswx @HolyCitySinner @Charlestonion

Super interesting how the prevalence of solar energy in CA drastically reduces and also time shifts the recommended energy conservation window. Instead of “all day” like in TX, it’s “just as/after the sun goes down”.
California is going into a major heat wave this weekend with the associated strain on the grid. Talking to many reporters and reading/watching media, it's clear that there is still a lot of confusion about what this means. So, a🧵

Yes, these are the kind of discussions you have in your family group chat when your sibling is an engineer who works in the power transport and delivery field, even though he specializes in concrete. A whole gosh darn family of nerds. 🤓😂

Also, someone please figure out a good way for individual condo/apartment owners to have their own solar panels. Asking for me. (This is gonna bring out the spambots and scammers, isn’t it? Why is solar installation such a scam-ridden sector?)

We learned last year when campus A/C went out and it was 95°F (35°C) + basically 100% humidity in classrooms that there are no OSHA regs on max temps in workplaces. Only affected us for ~2 weeks, but some deal with life-threatening high temps for way longer. Seems so messed up!
My delivery Teamster told me that UPS claims they can’t afford to put fans or air conditioning in her truck, but they CAN afford to install cameras to spy on their workers??

How do we fix this? Call federal reps? Seems like it should be dealt with on an OSHA/federal level, not left to individual unions (for those lucky to have them) to have to negotiate? (I know there are more pressing matters and the federal gov is slow, but we should still try?)

No but for real, those images were pretty spectacular, especially the nebulae. 🌌🤩 Too bad the telescope is still named after a person who adamantly did not believe that cool space stuff was for everyone. 👎🏻👎🏻

Oh and on the off chance your feed isn’t ALL SPACE PICTURES right now, you can see and download the new stuff at nasa.gov/webbfirstimages And they’re public domain, so you can go forth and make cool things with them if you want! ✨
