New study in @JAMAHealthForum: In 2023 alone, 705,331 US deaths would have been averted if US mortality rates matched those of other high-income countries. The gap is staggering—and it’s growing. #missingAmericans 🧵 (1/5) tinyurl.com/569pr9ty

The US mortality crisis is decades in the making—shaped by policies that fostered car-centric cities, fragmented health care, weak safety nets, and poor nutrition. These systemic failures cost lives every day—and reversing course will require bold, structural change. (4/5)

Between 1980 and 2023, the US experienced approximately 14.7 million excess deaths compared to other high-income countries, with mortality rates rising significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic and remaining elevated due to systemic issues. ja.ma/3Z071Fp

Early adult mortality in the US has increased since 2011, with excess deaths driven by drug poisoning, transport-related deaths, alcohol-related deaths, and other causes. ja.ma/4hibcn9 @astokespop

Tobacco 21 policies, which raise the legal age for tobacco access to 21, could avert up to 526,000 premature deaths and gain 13.3 million life-years by 2100 if fully enforced. ja.ma/41wAY1M @jamie_tam @yaleSPH @CenterTobacco

What's the future of #mortality in high-income countries? Making predictions (especially about the future) is hard. But that doesn't stop us from trying...I'm happy to share this contribution to the PDR 50th anniversary special issue: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/… #Demography

I was about to place bets with my fellow demographers on when US obesity rates would turn the corner due to GLP-1 drugs… I definitely didn’t think it would be this quick! And while I *hope* it’s true, I’m not popping my champagne quite yet. 1/ #ozempic #obesity #GLP1
NEW: we may have passed peak obesity 🎉📈📉🙏 In what might be one of the most significant trends I have ever charted, the US obesity rate fell last year.
