The Ni Research Group (@RuiniLab), had several talks at APS covering bubble dynamics in turbulence, particle deposition, fish schooling in turbulence, fluid physics, and compressible particle-laden flow. It was another great conference for our group. Thank you! @APSphysics

This is the first photograph of supersonic flow over a blunt body, taken by Ernst Mach in 1887 using a shadowgraph system. Supersonic flight studies date back to Newton in Principia (1687), where he calculated the value of the speed of sound for the first time. #FluidMechanics

I tried making a PowerPoint presentation on a large white board today in the lab. I felt zero anxiety, which I usually do when clicking a mouse and dragging pictures everywhere. It helped me to think “Big Picture,” how everything is connected. #AcademicChatter @AcademicChatter

Replying to @marayikkottu
@marayikkottu We see the same thing in our experiments. When particles cluster together, a large bow shock forms around them. The bow shock persists in time until the particles leave the cluster, forming their own bow shocks. See the picture. This is a high-speed jet (Mach 1).
What happens to irregular particulates in high-speed gas environments?

It’s exciting to see so many contributors to the PSI work, which is scarce. Make sure to check out the PSI sessions on Thursday. I will be presenting my work on the NASA Physics Focused Ground Test for an impinging Mach 5 jet in Martian and near-Lunar conditions. #AIAASciTech

Today’s highlight at @aiaa SciTech was seeing numerical simulations performed by @NASA, which fully capture phenomena we observed in our experiments for plume-surface interaction.

While reading about coherent structures in turbulent jets, authors (Ball et al., 2012) cited Salvador Dali’s painting, “Swans reflecting elephants,” on our interpretation of coherent motion. Can you tell why? #Fluids #Turbulence #Dali

I just found this NASA technical report reporting on the interaction between a highly-underexpanded jet and a bed of sand. It's 2021, and we know very little about this plume-surface interaction. Standing on the shoulders of giants, literally. #PSI #NASA #MultiphaseFlow
