I'm recruiting THREE PhD students for Fall 2024 (nematode systematics, marine eDNA, invertebrate microbiomes) - more info here biklab.org/join-the-lab including my mentoring philosophy + training portfolio! @SACNAS #2023NDiSTEM #BWEEMS #WomenInSTEM @LatinxMarineSCI @BlackinMarSci
The Suria Lab is officially open! So thrilled to be joining the wonderful biology department @OhioWesleyan and to keep working on the genetics of bacterial competition (in squid 🦑) with amazing undergrads!
(Beautiful lab sign is thanks to my postdoc advisor, Alecia Septer ❤️)
So proud of my undergrads, Klodia and Dani, presenting @unc_our Celebration of Undergrad Research!

Researchers show that certain bacteria are required for formation of a female-specific organ in the Hawaiian bobtail squid, providing the 1st example of complete organ development relying on exposure to symbiotic bacteria in an animal host. @mbiojournal: asm.social/11t
Check out @SarahMackAttack’s thread for the highlights of our new paper!
HOT OFF THE PRESS!
It's a story of bobtails. The female bobtails have a consortium of bacteria living in many tubes called the ANG. This bacteria is used to protect developing baby squid!
What happens when squid grow up without that community nearby?

Amazing to see this out! This was a huge collaborative project between lots of students in the @spencernyholm lab where each persons neg result (from months of squid raising) got us one step closer to understanding how microbes impact squid development
Excited to share our paper out in mBio! A defensive symbiotic organ in female bobtail squid only develops when the natural bacterial community is present! Lots of great work by @SarahMackAttack @asuria25 @spencernyholm and several others not on Twitter. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…
My SPIRE summer undergrad, Selena Garcia, did a great job presenting at the UNC Summer Programs Poster Session today! It’s been great to continue mentoring her research since my #TinyEarthNCCU class last year!

So proud to see two of my undergrads, Kylie Showalter & Daniela Zarate, presenting at UNC’s Celebration of Undergraduate Research! It’s their first poster and they said “Now we feel like real scientists!” Love to hear it 😊

Colombian + dancer + scientist = dance your PhD in a Colombian Afro-Caribbean style of dance! I am so excited to share with the world my submission to the #DanceYourPhD contest. I hope you all have as much fun watching it as we did making it! ❤️youtube.com/watch?v=IRPBm12d…
I’m happy to chat about my experience, which has been amazing! It’s been a great experience to surround myself with others passionate about teaching as much as research.
Join the SPIRE IRACDA Postdoc program at UNC! Looking for future science researchers-educators. Apps due Feb 1, 2022
