Hip-hip-hooray!! It's the fall plant sale at Ausable Conservation Nursery! We'll be putting our native plants to bed soon, but you can bring some home before we do. 🧡🥰 Reach out to Kristen at [email protected] to learn more and place your order before Friday, Oct 30th.
54 years ago today, the Clean Water Act became law, giving communities the tools to protect the waters they love. We’re proud to do that work here at home - replacing undersized culverts, planting native trees, and tracking biodiversity & water quality. We❤️healthy Adk waters.
SCALE (Survey of Climate & Adk Lake Ecosystems) teams have visited lots of gorgeous lakes this summer. But even the less dramatic landscapes offer up beautiful views. Take this small roadside pond, for example, where staff enjoyed watching minnows and dragonflies darting around.
Wastewater treatment and landfill facilities do an incredible amount of work to keep our communities safe and comfortable. We recently visited three of these local facilities to learn about all the technology and procedures they use to protect our rivers, streams, & groundwater.
Help us reach our goal of planting 1,000 baby trees this month! We'll be working at pre-selected locations along the Ausable River from 9 am - noon every Tuesday morning in October and we'd love to have you join us. Email us at [email protected] to learn more and sign up.
Even the worst case of the Mondays can't compete with Adirondack views this time of year! Our Healthy Streams team took a break to enjoy the beautiful fall colors on the East Branch Ausable River. Fog clinging to the eastern slopes of the Sentinel Range = icing on the cake! 😍
It's Punday! Wood sorrel & clover look very similar with their low lying trifoliate leaves, but they’re actually very different! Clover = pea family. Wood sorrel = its own wood sorrel family. Don’t worry, a four-leaf wood sorrel is just as lucky as a four-leaf clover!
Protecting the places and people we love from a changing climate means restoring, monitoring, and caring for the freshwater systems that protect us in return. Read more about our experience at NYC Climate Week here: ausableriver.org/blog/reflec…
A group of eager paddlers joined us to learn about the history & ecology of the stretch of the West Branch Ausable River we all know as Lake Everest. It's a wonderful place to see a diverse array of plants, birds, turtles and other aquatic species. 😍
SCALE (Survey of Climate & Adk Lake Ecosystems) tracks weather and other conditions at some of our study lakes to better understand conditions in and around them. Along with weather stations, we installed trail cameras that will be used to monitor ice in and ice out on the lakes.
The new culvert @ John Bliss Rd is complete! As shown here, the original 3' diameter pipe was replaced w/a new open-bottom 15.8' wide aluminum arch. The Town of Wilmington has re-opened the road & plans repaving for early next week. Special thanks to all our project partners.
🍁😍Register today and join us on Wednesday, September 23rd from 8:30 - 10:30 am for an interpretive paddle on Lake Everest. This event is free, but space is limited. Please email [email protected] to register and let us know if you'd like to borrow paddling equipment.
Rivers are awesome - supporting cool critters, providing freshwater we all rely on, and literally shaping the world around us! In high water events, nutrient rich sediment is transported & deposited on riverbanks forming the basis for beautiful vegetated buffers.
When last minute change of plans made our SCALE crews down a canoe, supporters at West Caroga Lake saved the day and lent us a vessel. Was Josh the first person to ever sample eDNA from a pedal boat? We can’t be sure, but we like to think so. 😆🤓🎉
One aspect of sampling for the Survey of Climate & Adirondack Lake Ecosystems (SCALE) is greenhouse gas sampling. Researchers compare air in the sample with a sample of ambient air to determine relative amounts of gases like carbon dioxide and methane at different water depths.
