New blog post!
I used 976 million tokens to figure out the personalities of different AI models
We find that character training recipes are converging, that labs are trying to reduce sycophancy, and discover some models are more creative than others!

Sarah at Notion is very good, and has done more with at Notion platform than at Google has with GSuite
That being said, she is missing the fact that personal agents and the platforms they are use are in a Red Queen's Race, meaning that in order to not fall behind both must run frantically against each other.
The "lead" in the race will change over time, but eventually Amazon will be unable to defend because the rate of computer use capability improvement > rate of defense capability improvement. The only final defense would be biometric auth everywhere, with something like Worldcoin.
I frequently walk by this bakery shop in SoHo that is *perpetually* empty. Really small spot so I finally got a croissant and ate it outside
Genuinely in the 10 minutes of croissanting maybe 20 people came in and there was a line outside
I am a tastemaker of epic proportions
Flemish Giants are the best breed of rabbit! They are small-dog sized and can be walked on a leash as well.
A personal signs that I have "'made it" will be when I have two of these guys living with me :)
One day!
Chinese satellite infrastructure is the latest example of Shanghai's encroachment upon America's sphere of influence
Their Starlink equivalents--Guowang and Qianfan--are already technically able to provide continuous global coverage. As a result, they are partnering with Airbus (!) and have MOUs everywhere from Brazil to Turkey.
This is atop China's already gigantic terrestrial telecom footprint in Africa (via Belt & Road / Digital Silk Road) and Europe (via a lack of regulation)
That being said, like all industries China enters, America is way, way ahead. So the playbook here is also the same: defend IP fervently and increase the pace of domestic manufacturing.
someone please make Palantir for dogs I'm sick of these fluffy dachshunds using their cuteness to pee all over the city
for all the talk about pro rata rights, there are literally billions in unused investment rights held by seed funds that would have otherwise been deployed
this is so common that there is an entire venture fund, Megalith, dedicated to taking seed funds' pro rata
For those who do not know!
The most beautiful building in New York is The Alwyn Court, located right by Columbus Circle.
I encourage you to go and simply look at the ornamentation on the outside. Getting lost in the terracotta façade is lovely feeling :)
Replying to @avikrishna
"hey man, do you want to go see my favorite building in manhattan" he says, at 11pm
sort of weird to think about, but this sort of building will ~never be built again in the U.S.
basically all the developer incentives point away from any kind of ornamentation, so we'll just continue to get gray blobs that dot the skylines essentially till the end of time?
the only way to reverse this trend is by achieving a utopia where capital flows so freely that we solve all of ills of urban design, which would enable turning every part of society into a ludicrously awesome passion project
such a utopia is only happening in the long term so for the next 50 years get ready for the most disgusting housing and office stock you've ever seen
for context this is like if Taiwan took out WeChat
imagine telling a war studies analyst in 2022 that not only is Ukraine going to hold it's own for years against Russia, it will engage in tactical offensives so successful they threaten to blow up the entire Russian financial system as a function of systemically destroying their data centers
absolutely bonkers levels of resilience
Sightglass and Sohn in SF are these beautiful, cavernous coffee and pastry shops in SF that really give an unparalleled experience. It's truly a city that's mastered the coffee chat.
Interestingly, this sort of gigantic coffee shop is almost entirely absent in NYC. Basically, it requires a sufficiently risk-taking coffee chain to enter a former industrial space that happens to be vacant and in the heart of the city.
So of course, the single place in New York that's has this vibe is in... Long Island City, which is rapidly gentrifying out of its former industrial shell. It is called Greats of Craft and it's a bar/coffee shop (alcohol makes the big bucks).
Anyway. SF may lag New York's social scene in many ways but its coffee and bakery culture is much, much better. Better pastries, better beans, better spaces, and frankly, better baristas!
I am reading Fight Club (the book) and it's incredibly refreshing: the metaphors are poignant and not at all hand-wavy
Moreover, the prose elicits imagery so vivid and real in a way that LLMs currently can't do
Highly recommend fiction a sort of "antivenom" to LLM psychosis
