All signs pointed to a below normal hurricane season, no one thought it would go to this extreme. There have been ZERO hurricanes in the North Atlantic so far this year. September 10th (Thursday) is considered the "peak" of the Atlantic hurricane season. If we get through Friday without one forming, it will be the first time in the satellite era (since 1966) that we have gone this deep into the year without a hurricane in the Atlantic! There have been two hurricane seasons that ended up with no hurricanes on record, 1907 and 1914. However, those seasons occurred long before satellites monitored the oceans, meaning several open-sea hurricanes likely went undetected by ships. Since satellite tracking began, the quietest seasons on record produced two hurricanes, 1982 and 2013. The way things are going, that record is also in jeopardy! #ElNiño
