Colman Domingo fires back at Elon Musk for planning to make an AI version of "The Odyssey" that will be "historically accurate." “By historically accurate, he means whiter than Christmas at Cracker Barrel," Domingo said. "Of course, this is all because Elon and his Musketeers are upset over the diversity casting of ‘The Odyssey.' And I don’t want to get technical here, but you can’t make a historically accurate version of something that is totally made the f*ck up." variety.com/2026/film/news/c…

Few storytellers have shaped how Black women see themselves quite like Mara Brock Akil. Now, she’s telling a different kind of story. For decades, her television characters have reflected our joy, our ambition, our relationships, and our becoming. With her debut novel, The Revelation of Dionne Daphne, she’s expanding that legacy, proving that the most powerful stories aren’t confined to a single medium. In our latest digital cover story, ESSENCE Festival of Culture curator Mara Brock Akil opens up about honoring ESSENCE’s legacy through fiction, embracing a new creative chapter, and why stories remain one of our greatest pathways to healing, belonging, and self-discovery. Read Mara Brock Akil’s Next Chapter, now on ESSENCE.com, and grab your special edition double issue on newsstands today.

Barack: You told me all those years ago that you couldn’t promise me the world, but you could promise me an interesting life. Of course, you outdid yourself and managed to give me both. Eight years in the crucible, and not once did you melt from the heat. Not once did you let it harden you. Instead, you used it to reveal your truest essence: your stubborn optimism and unflinching courage, your dazzling brilliance and unpretentious decency, your ferocious work ethic and absolutely unshakable moral fiber.

More than 40 years ago, I arrived in Chicago in search of an idea. I was a young man looking for purpose, who believed deeply in America, was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, and wanted to be a part of something larger. The America I believed in was one where everyone has opportunity, everyone is seen, everyone belongs—because that was an America that had a place for me, too.
