ATTN: I've seen screenshots from internal Unity channels. I'm not gonna post them and you can trust me or not. You can expect a lot of clarification soon, it seems. Things like what's an install? Pretty clear from what I saw that things like demos, Game Pass, giveaways, bundles are not meant to be installs. Likewise they don't seem to want to count re-installs per user (so that addresses Install-Bombing). They have solutions for detecting piracy but it all sounds up in the air, not final nor actually implemented. Bear in mind the Unity execs have to make the final calls so who knows where it all lands? It seems like the intent is in the right place but it's all a chaotic mess. But - while this may address a lot of developer concerns the bigger concern is that they rolled this information out in such poor shape with so little details or things actually in place. How much brand damage was done and how much faith burned? None of this even touches issues like actually charging for installs to begin with or removing the Plus plan. I think your average Steam developer will be just fine. A few will have to pay pennies after making tons of money. Some will pay a lot after making millions. I think mobile devs might be in for a world of pain. Margins are super thin there. Normally when Unity things happen and the internet explodes it's all ok and just dramatic nonsense. Not this time. This time is different. These are core fundamental changes that chip away at the bedrock of Unity and the unwritten trust between Unity and 10's of thousands of developers. I've used and loved Unity since v3 and it's great! We all want the caretakers of Unity to just act better and do the right things. This new plan rollout is an inexcusable mess.
