Belfast and the Universe🧵
My wife and two boys have now lived in Northern Ireland for a year. We’re settled and forging roots to last a lifetime. We face all the normal family struggles, but we’re happy.
People often ask me why I live in Belfast when the sun and seemingly everything else seems to be back in California, where I was born and raised. And there’s no simple answer to that. A bit of adventure. Affordable housing was a big draw. There was a mystical experience at a pub in San Francisco’s Richmond district. Lots of reasons. I can’t explain it. We’re just here.

Watch this, please. What a remarkable, courageous, and kind person. His admiration for the unarmed teacher who took on the shooter shines through. Please pray for him. He's carrying a lot -- there is such a cost to taking a life, even when it's necessary.
Bend, Oregon man who shot and killed a shooter at his daughters' school speaks out, praises female teacher for fighting the shooter, allowing him to have a clear shot.
Kaylub Giamanco says he is haunted by the sound of children pleading for their lives.
He also praised the teacher for grabbing the gunman's weapon, allowing him to take a shot at the shooter.
"I want to recognize [the teacher]. She gave me the opportunity to make my shot without losing my life..."
"I swung the door open, and I stepped in, and I fired, and they dropped to the ground... I looked down at the gunman, and he was scrambling for his weapon. And I looked at him, and I shot him 2 more times..."
I recently climbed Slieve Donard with my nine-year-old. The weather was perfect. Hundreds were out, including Air Ambulance fundraisers and Scouts troops from across the island. My son turned to his wee mate and said, isn’t Northern Ireland the greatest? I’m so happy we’re here.

WJC and the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland organized a meeting with Ireland’s Taoiseach @MichealMartinTD for WJC-affiliated communities and their J7 Task Force counterparts from @ADL and @Conf_of_Pres.
We will continue working together with @GovIL as part of their ongoing EU Council Presidency to ensure differences over Israel do not fuel antisemitism or threaten Jewish life.
We’re lucky in Belfast to have the extraordinary Catholic Chaplaincy at Queen’s. I feel nourished and energised after a talk on Cardinal Newman and good chat. I’m going to make more time for intellectual life.

What a silly and dull thing to type. There’s a big world outside your phone mucker, people with different lives and ideas all doing their best , helping each other out and enjoying life as much as they can. Give it a whirl 🙏
Does anyone know where along the Belfast Lough you can see HMS Elizabeth? Can I just take the kids down to Sea Park? Or Titanic Quarter?
Hot damn, a Ukrainian Antonov An-124-100M Ruslan at Belfast International! One of the largest cargo planes ever built. On the front it says, “Be brave like Mykolaiv.” The tail reaches nearly 7 stories tall. Outstanding.

The extent of the PISA gap between England + other western European countries is extraordinary.
In reading, the 25% most disadvantaged pupils in England outperformed the average for *all* students in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway etc...
A decade ago there was no gap
New post out:
England's schools are now the second highest performing in the world outside the far east, according to the PISA study.
Is this because of policy? Attitude to technology? Cultural factors like immigration? And where can we still improve?

MUST WATCH: @SorchaEastwood summarises the whole debate in one short sentence: "We should support those people to live first before we contemplate their death".

A huge moment and not just for Britain.
No parliament has debated assisted suicide so thoroughly, forensically and passionately. The result has been a collapse in support as people woke up to the dangers.

The manosphere offers young men a script for life, and sadly, it is more tangible than what liberal society offers. We are quite good at telling people what not to become, but considerably weaker at providing thick, compelling accounts of what they should become.
‘The manosphere offers boys belonging. We must give them something better’

This from Jon Burrows feels more like an intra-N Ireland argument than one inspired by a hunger for justice for Afghan women. Consider this letter from an Afghan journalist in Dublin. Afghan women at Stormont supporting sport is a daring act of resistance.
Belfast, I need your help. I need two 5/8” square nuts to finish a project. No one seems to sell imperial sizes. I’d be infinitely grateful if you know where I can get these today or tomorrow.
