It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Trump and Abiy: Iran and Eritrea/Tigray
According to the Wall Street Journal, «President Trump is at a crossroads that could define his legacy: He could sign a deal that curbs Iran's nuclear program, or launch a war with hard-to-control consequences for the U.S. and the Middle East.” The same is true of #Ethiopia’s PM Abiy, who is amassing troops to encircle #Tigray and maybe to wage war on #Eritrea and claim the Assab port.
The comparison between Trump’s predicament and Ethiopia’s military posturing can be instructive insofar as both leaders confront adversaries and pursue legacy-defining goals. However, the geopolitical contexts differ fundamentally:
In the U.S.–Iran case, the central issue is nuclear weapons proliferation and regional security involving major world powers with global strategic interests. Trump leads a global superpower with unmatched military reach and complex alliance systems, while Abiy governs a fragile federal state dealing with internal fracturing and limited external support.
Though one cannot compare the USA to Ethiopia or Trump to Prime Minister Abiy, there is some room for analogy. Trump doesn’t like Abiy, claiming that Abiy snatched his Nobel Peace Prize that was meant for him in 2019. Both are amassing troops to fight their adversaries. Both want to be autocrats, above the law in their respective countries. Both want to leave legacies. Both have abandoned their allies. Abiy wants to be remembered for bringing Ethiopia access to the sea, “making Ethiopia great again,”
But Abiy doesn’t have the options that Trump has. Trump’s decapitating war on Iran may be imminent, but Abiy’s war rhetoric that has been going on for more than two years may remain the same or end up with limited clashes that do not develop into a full-scale war, unless mishaps occur. Yet the dream of having access to the sea will always remain on the agenda until the ‘right’ moment arrives.
Abiy’s troop buildup may be a show of force to his sponsors and adversaries (Eritrea, TPLF, Fano, and OLA), who have more options than Abiy and are already working together to bring his downfall. Abiy is isolated regionally, with backing from the UAE, which is facing backlash from Saudi Arabia and its allies aligned with Eritrea. His army is exhausted, lacks middle-level officers, has a low fighting morale. If a full war breaks out, it will not be short and will have unintended ramifications in the whole region. In Ethiopia’s case, military action could deepen humanitarian suffering and destabilize a volatile region already shaped by years of conflict in #Sudan and Tigray.

Former Turkish prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkey’s presence in Somalia was about preserving unity, not expansion.
Recounting a 2012 London summit, he said the UK lobbied African and European diplomats to recognise Somaliland as a separate state, an effort he personally blocked.
“We are bringing stability to Somalia. You are trying to divide it,” Davutoglu told then British foreign secretary William Hague, adding that if the UK was so focused on recognising a state, “first recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, then we can talk about Somaliland.”
He said Turkey later brought Somali and Somaliland leaders together in Ankara to establish unity, underlining his belief that Turkey’s engagement was about keeping Somalia intact.

Dear Dr. Rashid,
Do you think Tigray should secede from Ethiopia, taking into account how you felt about the last war? Which you classified as clear case of genocide.
And while you’re at it, would you recommend that, if Tigray goes, Somalia should retake the oil-rich Somali Region?
And since, in an earlier post, you said Somalia is about fear while the secessionist northern province (S’land) is about hope, how would you rate #fear and #hope in Ethiopia and in Tigray?
Point being: ma anaga uun baad naga adagtahay?
Even in your own country, Kenya, you are not nearly this dissecting.

Unpacking Dr. Rashid’s Narrative-Laundering Tweet
The message Dr. @RAbdiAnalyst’s tweet is trying to convey is not about the rumored arrival of Turkish fighter jets in Somalia or the possible risks associated with that.
It is about smuggling a set of false legal premises that turn international law on its head.
Here are the top seven misrepresentations being laundered:
1.That Somalia does not legally control the airspace over its northern regions.
Under international law, Somalia is responsible for — and sovereign over — its entire territory, including the skies above the secessionist northern regions known as Somaliland.
2.That foreign states enjoy a free pass to operate in that airspace without Somalia’s consent.
They do not. Overflight and access require sovereign authorization, and Somalia has that authority.
3.That enforcing sovereign airspace constitutes escalation rather than normal state responsibility.
It doesn’t. Airspace control is a core obligation of any recognized state.
4.That a non-recognized entity can “own” or control airspace under international law.
It cannot. Everyone knows that — and the good doctor knows it too.
5.That internal political disputes suspend or dilute Somalia’s sovereignty.
They don’t.
6.That Somalia must justify exercising authority over its own territory.
It does not. The law is clear.
7.That defense cooperation with Turkey is abnormal rather than lawful and treaty-based.
It isn’t. Such cooperation is entirely legitimate.
No amount of misdirection or narrative laundering passes for fact.
