The capture of Chattanooga was the Union’s most important gain of 1863. Though overshadowed by Gettysburg and Vicksburg, and marred by a subsequent bloody defeat, it was a major strategic victory won through brilliant operational maneuver. OTD the Chickamauga Campaign began.🧵

Fantastic photos of WWII and Cold War sub pens.
One abandoned naval tunnel in Dalmatia is named "Hitler's eyes". Situated near Šibenik in Croatia, German Wehrmacht started to build it in late 1943 to protect torpedo boats from Allied air attacks. After WWII, communist Yugoslavia finished it. It was named like this by local fishermen because looking at it from afar it resembles a human eye and due to its WWII connection with Germany.

Cannae is wrongly said to be one of those battles that perfectly embodies a specific tactic—in its case a double envelopment. In fact, Hannibal’s tactics were singularly unlike anything before or after. With one notable exception: the Battle of Agincourt.
Hannibal’s famous victory at Cannae in 216 BC is one of the most misunderstood battles of all time. It is often cited as a tremendous victory won by a perfectly-executed double envelopment. The truth is very different—and far more interesting. Thread

An orderly advance to the sound of drum and fife against the din of constant gunfire - it stirs the blood.

It was a fantastic event, I'd never seen a full reenactment before. 800 reenactors took part, many of them camping out in the cold. It will go on Sunday too if you're in the NYC/Westchester area: visitwestchesterny.com/250/r…

Trafalgar is not the only significant milhist anniversary today: OTD in 1600 was Sekigahara, the largest battle on mainland Japan that inaugurated the long peace of the Edo Period.

Meanwhile Ieyasu's triumph cut short these tactical developments as Japan enjoyed a long period of domestic tranquility without serious external threats - leading to the dynamics of military stagnation that Andrade describes so well in the Gunpowder Age. xitter.cf/bazaarofwar/status/195…
Really enjoyed this one, on the evolution of gunpowder weapons from their first appearance in the 9th century through the 19th. Rather than simply narrate the divergence of China and the West, however, it analyzes the dynamics driving their parallel evolution.

But what makes Sekigahara well worth the visit is that the vistas are so clear, allowing you to see clearly what each commander perceived as the battle progressed and understand the decisions leading up to the culminating moment.
