Well I know everyone had a rough day today.
Everyone has their own style.
Mine is long term conviction, start small, and never hold through your bUy point unless you are sure of low down side.
I sold $HPE for a tiny gain.
Restored buying power.
Now I am on timing the bottom mode.
Not exact bottoms.
And again, if the floor goes, just sell.
Because you started small anyway.
Can always stack more later.
$CIFR 5.21
$WULF 9.64
$IREN 18.71
$SHAZ 19.45
$FPS 18.11
Around $2000 invested for now.
Here is my shopping list today! And available buying power (margin on).
Chop wood, carry water.
It's a funny saying about doing the boring stuff.
All good companies go up with time. Emotional people and computer algorithms make things go up and down on any particular day.
My watch list is long as I go shopping on discounts:
$CIFR - Known contracts, Texas data center slow down?
$WULF - Known contracts, only 1 Texas data center. Other ones in already blue states
$MU - somewhat reasonable valuation now after trailing twelve month revenues of $120B
$SHAZ - Australian data center play, some joint ventures in Texas
$HPE - Undervalued favorite for networking and servers
$GLW - Both data center optics but big Verizon/Att contracts for fiber upgrades
$FPS - Power matters
Round trips are fine.
Holding through volatility is also ok.
But try not to lose money for no reason.
I sold my high conviction $HPE for a tiny gain.
The company is strong. The fundamentals are great..
But the stock market is reactionary.
Now the price is looking even better.
Why hold through drawdowns when you can buy back in better?
Not yet. All these AI stocks 2-5xed in a year, so they have some room to fall. The fast up will bring them down fast too...$HPE can easily go back to mid-30 or high-20 with all this new uncertainty
Remember. Nothing has changed in the last 2 days compared to the last 90 days.
This is reactionary.
Land didn't go away, power didn't shut off.
Once the uncertainty is washed out, everything will stabilize and start propping up again.
But how long does uncertainty last? I wish any of us knew.
Could it be when Congress changes in January? Could it be after some bills are passed by governors? Could it just be end of year tax harvesting?
Even Nvidia went through a top to bottom.
Corrections are healthy, and a time to buy.
New day, new day in the market.
Buying power: $250k
Let's see if we got any long term contenders.
Current list:
$BKNG
$NVO
$GOOG
$AMZN
$HPE
Total money gained: $5000
Total money lost: $0
Even with $HPE, I didn't buy the top, I didn't chase, I paitently waited. Circumstances changed the price movement, but I was disciplined and preserved capital as my entry point was about to be lost.
Follow button ⬆️
My $HPE journey:
Stock price: $49 to $75 to $49
Gain:
0 to +$100k to +$5000
But I'm not looking to sell something after a 3 month hold, paying capital gains, and then trying to time another play.
Round trips don't bother me one bit.
I also don't mind re-entering the position.
True wealth comes with holding long term. Short term wealth feels nice. But to get the 3-10x wins, you have to hold.
Maybe $HPE will be it, but right now I would rather wait to get back in instead of risking a big sum go lower for absolutely no reason.
Let's see what we do next.
No obvious plays are sticking out to me right now.
This election season was unexpected.
Nothing will stop AI, nothing will stop the capex and build out.
But can it slow down? For sure.
Can people in their communities vote against data centers? For sure.
Can new rules and regulations be introduced before permits are given? For sure.
Not worth holding through that when names like $GOOG are at yearly lows, $NVO and $LLY showing strong sales in medications, $BKNG and $UBER growing gross sales year over year, and even $RIVN can get some excitement as an EV play.
The rotation into safety stocks will be huge.
There are a ton of names at good valuations.
Software, healthcare, travel, big tech.
$NBIS, $IREN, $CIFR, $MRVL, etc will all do well with time. But they have all 5xed in the last few years, some even more.
Data centers won't go away, AI won't go away.
You just have to hold through even more volatility.
I'm looking to pick up these names on big discounts.
Being able to change is important.
When a state changes it's government for the first time in 30 years, that is a shift.
AI is still alive. Technology and progress happens with all governments.
But all of a sudden, $GOOG at $290 with its chips/distribution/diversified revenue and $AMZN with its AWS/retail platform look like a great place to park money.
Both are up less than 10% on the year. They are growing revenues. They have the AI infrastructure in place.
And stocks will rally with a gridlocked government. Mag7 rally looks likely.
Major Sell Alert 🚨
I wanted $HPE to be a one year hold.
But I haven't truly lost a meaningful amount of money on a stock in a very long time.
I also believe in macroeconomic environments.
This Blue Storm will slow the pace of AI buildout. It will still happen. But it will take longer. I have worked in government and I work in healthcare, I know just how slow things move when regulation comes into play.
$HPE is pretty insulated because it has huge government contracts, energy efficiency infrastructure, and still has all those deals.
But I have no interest in holding through my entry point.
If it goes lower, I buy in again.
I don't lose money.
I don't mind roundtrips.
I don't mind starting again from break even.
$247k ready to go. +$5k in the end, was up $100k at one point.
But no one could have predicted yesterday. Texas going blue for the first time in 30 years is real change. And when information changes, you should too.
Keep following to play the safe investment game to wealth ⬆️
Time to look for the next 1 year or longer investment, knowing that government will be headlocked for the next 2 years.
If you are following people who talk about the AI trade being on and off (like some kind of light switch) they are showing loser behavior. Be careful💡
Quick takes without any reading:
$ANET just beat earnings. Networking play trading at $200B market cap on annual revenue of $10Bish.
$AMD looks like it beat earnings, up nicely after hours, probably on data center revenue.
Why do I care?
$HPE has the second best networking play on the market. Same revenue as $ANET, $70B market cap.
$HPE has major data center partnerships with $AMD.
Cool cool cool long $HPE, up 2% after hours.
Did you panic sell at the bottom?
Holding through volatility for a new marketplace is tough.
It was tough holding $TSLA while they built electric cars. It was tough holding $SHOP while they helped build up E-commerce. It is tough holding $UBER as rideshare is only 3% of global transportation.
In that sense, $HPE is easy.
Let's run it back to $75 and beyond!
🟢 and more 🟢 please, +$20k.
No sells, just buys.
The second thing people are not giving $GOOG and $AMZN credit for is their investments.
These 2 companies are some of the best investors.
Think about $MSFT Microsoft: They bought Skype, and $ZM should have never even existed. They were so far ahead, and then just messed up. Then they bought LinkedIn, and the site had huge growth. But compare it to X and Facebook and Instagram. They have the biggest database of corporate America job resumes, and they have done nothing with it.
Think about $META. They burn money every single year just for the hell of it. VR spaces, glasses, AI packages, you name it. They have never shown a true return on investment. The bought Instagram and Whatsapp, and those have survived.
Now look at $GOOG and $AMZN. YouTube - amazing. Amazon delivery infrastructure - amazing. Waymo - amazing. Rivian - to be decided, but promising. SpaceX - nailed it. Anthropic - nailed it.
CapEx is just another word for investment, and that's how you make money.
Lots of fear around CapEx and investment cycles.
But there is a reason humans are naturally bad investors.
It takes FOREVER to make things work.
Some really good examples that I have invested in and had to ride the volatility:
1) $AMZN - when Amazon decided to buy planes and trucks and own their own warehouses, the markets hated them. All they saw was a waste of money. But $AMZN retail is on its way to being a $1 Trillion revenue platform.
2) $TSLA - I struggled holding $TSLA because I was a younger investor then. It really made my stomach churn. But I saw the vision. They owned the electric car, they owned the charging station, they own residential charging, and they owned the software. But the markets hated the investments, until they didn't.
Both eventually passed $1T market caps.
This AI buildout is no different. Wall Street is so bad at investments sometimes it's crazy.
Happy Monday!
Hope everyone had a good Halloween weekend!
I don't expect $GOOG and $AMZN to bounce back right away.
But I think people should give them credit for two things:
1) Both of these services are super sticky. Once I am in the ecosystem, I don't care about using another online shopping service, I don't care about using another email service, I don't care about using another maps service.
In fact, I get super annoyed when my workplaces make me use Outlook, or I buy something from an online store and I just have to wait for an unknown amount of time to get it to my house.
Sticky services matter. Things that have staying power matter.
Did you know $COST is 43 years old, and WMT is 64 years old?
All you had to do was buy and hold and not worry.
$GOOG and $AMZN are the same.
Part 2 tomorrow.
