For my friends in Western cultures, 666 is often associated with Satanism or the Number of the Beast
But look toward the East, especially Chinese culture, and you’ll find a completely different meaning
🇨🇳 666 (liù liù liù) = Awesome. Cool. Slick. Well done.
No association with the Devil. In Chinese internet slang, 666 is a positive expression of admiration, skill, or approval.
Why? The number 6 (liù) sounds similar to 溜 (liū), which can convey being smooth, slick, or skillful. The expression 六六大顺 (liù liù dà shùn) also conveys the wish that everything goes smoothly and without obstacles.
That’s why the number 6 is traditional good fortune and traditionally considered auspicious in many Chinese contexts, including business, weddings, phone numbers, and monetary gifts. Even a gift of RMB 6,666 can express wishes for good fortune and a smooth life.
Same number. Different cultures. Different meanings.
