If I have to spend my professional life saying one thing, it would be that the concept of 'going home' is not applicable to all students. For young ppl estranged from family, university is home, and their only home. Messaging needs to be inclusive of the variation in family life.

Can't beleive @beccablandish founder of @StandAloneHE will be leaving the helm of the charity. What a legacy she leaves behind though! Made such a difference to #students #estranged from their families & others. Made HE sector sit up, take notice, take action, & provide support.

I have a leasehold home in Hastings, where flats are common. I pay £120 a month for the m. company to do NOTHING. Then, they announce major works of £ in the middle of a cost of living crisis! Leasehold has to go. Seats like Hastings matter. @LKPleasehold #leasehold

Thank you @UKStandAlone for addressing family #estrangement - something SO taboo in our society that it is not discussed. Stepping away is a decision which is NOT taken lightly. Often, it is a cumulative decision, resulting from decades of toxicity & pain. Often, the decision is
I founded and grew @UKStandAlone for this very reason. Our research shows 1 in 5 families experience family estrangement, it’s not abnormal. We just don’t talk about it. People shouldn’t feel shame. In the face of abusive dynamics, drawing boundaries is important.

If @HumzaYousaf is truly focussed on preventing poverty, he must look at the poorest students. I hope he understands his own recent @theSNP research that shows estranged students so desperately need more financial support to stay in HE and succeed in society. 🙌 @NUSScotland
Sign our open letter to the new First Minister to demand that he does good on the promises his party made to students: nus-scotland.org.uk/fmletter Students need increased student support that does not negatively impact the amount of benefits they are eligible for.

The U.K is totally broken. A casual look at the news just baffles me. Boris's defence was a £200K publicly-funded (!) insult to the millions who lost ppl without a funeral. Then news of a 3.5million bonus to the boss of @BritishGas. How can anyone defend this culture?

Lockdown and the imposed isolation in the UK savaged my mental health. As someone without the support of family, my friends, work and community were so crucial. In many ways, my life and health has never fully recovered. Reading Johnson's defence turned my stomach. #Partygate

So pleased to be talking to @CosmopolitanUK this week about how our generation wants to deal with the trauma that’s passed down to us. Strong boundaries around damaging behaviour is so important in setting the culture anew…
