thenation.com/podcast/politi… 1. A string on a trenchant conversation between @TADurkin, @JoeFergChicago, @HeerJeet and me (not so trenchant) on the decidedly disturbing civil liberties implications of the lately (un)reformed section 2 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

First Zohran: NYC isn’t everywhere. Now Michigan isn’t everywhere. Where is everywhere? Some reactionary corner of rural Kansas?
Dem strategist Lis Smith argued a potential El-Sayed win in Michigan doesn’t prove progressives can win elsewhere. “Michigan isn't everywhere,” she told @DashaBurns. “If you can win in Michigan, you can win in Michigan.” Listen to #TheConversation: politi.co/4BAXcze

There's a Certain Type Of Guy who thinks having to choose is a brutish affectation. Like Bartleby he would prefer not to.
There is a Certain Type Of Guy (I do think it is usually a guy) who spends a lot of time publicly pronouncing who is good and evil. They can effortlessly sift

Any Democrat who has said anything critical about AES in public since he clinched the nomination is objectively pro-Trump and should be treated as such going forward. If the shoe was on the other foot they'd be saying that about us, and they'd have a point.

Israelis watched, without protest, as their politicians endorsed the largest mass slaughter of children in modern history. Then, when the dust settled, when no one could claim they weren’t aware of the full extent of the horrors, 90 percent voted for those same politicians again

What you call the “Jewish center” were parties (Bennett, Liberman) every analyst considered as far-right a few years ago.
If Israel's current exit polls hold, the parties representing the Jewish center will have to make a choice: partner with Arab parties or else keep Bibi in power. A pretty clear metaphor for the choice facing Israel more broadly.

This puts bit of a crimp in the Geddy Lee-Warren Kinsella-Paul Godfey civic-power axis. On second thought, never mind.
I think there are a lot of people on Toronto’s very powerful political centre/right who are going to wake up tomorrow wondering why they went all in on that guy of all the guys.

@mbompard

"playfull"
I was invited to panel w/Zizek a few y ago. So I read 2 of his books & couldn't figure out what it was abt, so I declined. I now bitterly regret missing the occasion as I attended one of his lectures and althought I still understood nothing I found him playfull & mesmerizing.

In two hours and fifteen minutes -- by turns witty, self effacing, scathing and melancholy -- Melenchon, running to be President of France and in with a legitimate chance to win (running from what the @nytimes refers to constantly as "the far left") makes substantive reference to (*not* name dropping) Garcia Marquez, Earskine Caldwell, Faulkner, Goethe, Shakespeare, Democritus, Marx, Hegel, Averroes, Rousseau, Robespierre, Aristotle, Camus, Philip K. Dick; I could go on. He quotes passages of text and scenes from the movies from memory and in detail. Duffus-Americanus will sneer and snark about communism and antisemitism but the simple truth is the guy's absurdly interesting. Canadians will want to mark his having been the only European leader of any note with courage enough to defend us against Fatso right out of the gate. Two plus hours and worth every minute. youtube.com/watch?v=5qS3PZkp…

Dull, pinched and parochial Brad Bradford is devoid of principle and full of rot. If it's mediocrity you seek in the Mayor of Toronto he's your man. Otherwise you know what to do.

Jamie Dimon carefully picks the peanuts out of Trump's scat and gobbles them down. @doughenwood
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon mocks The Economist during a tense exchange after being told he’s sounding like Trump: “I’m not Trumpian. I’m factual.” 🇺🇸 Interviewer: “You’re sounding Trumpy.” Jamie Dimon: “I’m not Trumpian. I’m factual. I don’t agree with this binary shit that goes on all the time. I think The Economist is the absolute best, most admirable thing in the world, and you should continue that.” Dimon delivers the last line with apparent sarcasm, poking fun at the publication while pushing back against the idea that agreeing with Trump on certain issues makes him a Trump supporter.

Magnifique! (As against Ezra Klein and Sarah Longwell agreeing strenuously that beyond the price of those books politics has nothing to say nytimes.com/video/opinion/10… )
I need Melenchon's thoughts on The Left Hand of Darkness and Book of the New Sun before I can fully commit.
