A member of the crew, Fourth Officer Joseph Boxhall was in charge of Lifeboat 2, one of the last to leave the ship. After realizing the sinking was inevitable, he focused on getting women and children into lifeboats. Lifeboat 2 was initially launched with only 17 passengers on board, despite having a capacity of 40. Boxhall was responsible for firing distress rockets and later navigating Lifeboat 2 toward the RMS Carpathia for rescue. He used a green flare to signal the Carpathia, aiding in the successful rescue of the passengers on his lifeboat. After the disaster, Boxhall testified at both the American and British inquiries into the sinking of the Titanic. He continued his maritime career and even served as a naval officer during World War I. He passed away in 1967 at the age of 83.

Harold Bride was the junior wireless operator aboard the ship. Bride and his senior colleague, Jack Phillips, were responsible for sending the SOS distress signals after the ship struck the iceberg. They continued transmitting messages until the ship's power failed, helping to coordinate the arrival of rescue ships. As the ship sank, Bride managed to escape and clung to an overturned collapsible lifeboat. He was eventually rescued by the RMS Carpathia. Despite suffering from hypothermia and having his feet crushed during the ordeal, Bride lived to tell the tale. His first-hand account, often cited in Titanic literature, provides a unique view into the events of that tragic night from the perspective of someone tasked with the urgent responsibility of calling for help. His actions, along with those of Phillips, played a crucial role in the rescue of the 705 survivors.

Violet Jessop, or “Miss Unsinkable” was a stewardess aboard the Titanic when it hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912. Despite the chaos, Jessop was put into Lifeboat 16 and was among the 705 survivors. Four years later, in 1916, she was serving as a nurse aboard the HMHS Britannic, a sister ship of the Titanic, when it hit a mine in the Aegean Sea. Remarkably, Jessop survived that disaster as well, thanks in part to her ability to swim well. Adding another layer to her incredible story, Jessop had also been on board the RMS Olympic, another sister ship of the Titanic, when it collided with a warship in 1911. Yet again, she emerged unscathed.

Isidor and Ida Straus were a Jewish American couple who died together on the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. Isidor was a member of the United States House of Representatives. Ida was a homemaker and the mother of seven children. Isidor and Ida were born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in the 1850s. They met in New York City and married in 1871. They had a successful business career and raised a large family. In 1912, Isidor and Ida were returning from a winter vacation in Europe when the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank. They were dead but their bodies were never recovered.

Isidor and Ida Straus were the co-owners of Macy's department store. Isidor, Ida, and their maid, Ellen Bird (it was her first week on the job), were all offered seats on Lifeboat No. 8. However, Isidor refused to board because there were still women and children on the sinking Titanic. He urged his wife to stay on the lifeboat, but Ida refused, saying, "I will not be separated from my husband. As we have lived, so will we die together." Ida then handed her fur coat to Bird, telling her that she would not be needing it, and ordered her to get on the lifeboat. The couple was last seen on the deck, standing arm in arm. After Bird was rescued, she tried to give the fur coat to Sara Straus Hess, the eldest daughter. Sara refused, saying her mother would have wanted Bird to keep it. In the 1997 Titanic film, the couple lying on the bed and holding hands is based on Ida and Isidor.

Claudette Colvin, at the age of 15 in 1955, refused to relinquish her seat to a white woman on a bus, asserting, "it's my constitutional right to sit here." This action occurred nine months before Rosa Parks' renowned protest. So, why did Colvin largely fade into obscurity while Parks became an icon of the Civil Rights movement? Many of the "incidents" within the Civil Rights movement were, in fact, meticulously orchestrated by the NAACP. Colvin, being an unmarried, pregnant teenager at the time, led the NAACP to reenact the incident with Rosa Parks, a respected older woman in her community. The NAACP wanted to avoid choosing someone who could be easily discredited or attacked. It's important to note that Rosa Parks' protest had a specific purpose: to challenge the notion of "separate but equal." In Montgomery, Alabama, buses at that time designated the front half for white individuals and the back half for Black individuals. If the "separate but equal" rule were true, once the white section filled, white passengers should have been turned away. However, this didn't happen. Instead, the bus driver expanded the white section and forced Black passengers to move back a row. Rosa Parks, not seated in the front of the bus but in the front of the Black section, refused to give up her seat. Her arrest highlighted that "separate but equal" was a false concept. When asked years later if she would repeat her actions, Colvin expressed, "I feel very, very proud of what I did. I do feel like what I did was a spark and it caught on. I'm not disappointed. Let the people know Rosa Parks was the right person for the boycott. But also let them know that the attorneys took four other women to the Supreme Court to challenge the law that led to the end of segregation."

Speaking at a conference on mental health in Kyiv on Wednesday, the Hollywood actor and activist, Sean Penn responded to a question from Kyiv Post with a harsh assessment of the Russian dictator. Penn responded by saying the “best definition that most people have ever heard of ‘evil,’ is the absence of good.”   “I think what I see in that person is an absence of anything even vaguely interesting, it’s like a vessel of nothingness,” he said. “I don’t want to live in a world where’s gangster with nukes gets to dictate my life” "If I were in the shoes of some of our leaders and could say something to Putin, I would have done it by fully arming Ukrainians yesterday" Sean has supported Ukraine from day one.

The small French village of Chambon-sur-Lignon received a surprise $2.4 million gift in the will of a 90-year-old Austrian man named Eric Schwam. Shocked officials soon learned that Schwam was paying the town back for saving him and his family from the Nazis 80 years earlier. He asked that the town use the money to fund education initiatives and scholarships for the local children.
