Excited to share some new work with Layton Rosenfeld (an amazing former intern in our group). Our microbiota can evolve w/in us in real time. Here, we ask how this ongoing evolution influences (or is influenced by) the ecological structure of the surrounding community.

I am excited to share that I will be starting a lab at @EmoryUniversity this September. We will aim to understand evolution by studying genomes of things ranging from viruses to humans. Looking for talented students and postdocs to do computational genomics. Get in touch! 1/2

Happy to (belatedly) share a new preprint led by grad students @nastialyulina and @zzzhiru_liu. This paper generalizes some of our earlier work on LD to a new class of summary statistics that aim to quantify the amount of homoplasy (or “scrambling”) produced by recombination.

These homoplasy metrics can be regarded as a continuous version of the classical 4-gamete test -- in some sense, they try to quantify the degree of linkage *equilibrium* between mutations, rather than the degree of *disequilibrium* measured by traditional metrics like r^2.

We show that this small shift can be useful for disentangling evolutionary forces (e.g. recombination and recurrent mutation) that are difficult to treat with existing methods. Would love to hear your questions and comments!

Very happy to announce I’ll be joining the physics dept @UF in the Fall as an assistant professor! Our group will study eco-evo dynamics of marine microbial communities, using theory & data analysis. Will be looking for students & postdocs so definitely reach out if interested.

The biggest advances in basic research are ones that change our understanding, and so by definition could not have been ones we saw coming. Meaning, if we're playing it right, we should expect the vast majority of research projects to not result in anything useful

Excited to share some new work led by Jimmy Ferrare. How do rapidly adapting pop'ns balance short-term selection for fitness & long-term selection for evolvability? We develop a theory to predict how these indirect selection pressures emerge from competition btw linked mutations

However, we also find that this greater evolutionary foresight is highly asymmetric: large pop'ns can still greedily select for mutations that lower their rate of adaptation (even to 0!) despite being more willing to weather short-term costs to realize long-term fitness gains.
