🚀 Big launch today at @photoroom_app ! Using @OpenAI’s new gpt image model model, we built 3 powerful tools in under 5 days — helping sellers and small teams create studio-quality visuals in seconds. No studio needed. Follow the thread 🧵

Energy is a massive constraint for AI but do you even know what energy your chatGPT convos are using? We're trying to change this by releasing ChatUI-energy, the first interface where you see in real-time what energy your AI conversations consume. Great work from @juliendelavande powered by spaces & TGI, available for a dozen of open-source models like Llama, Mistral, Qwen, Gemma and more. Should all chat interfaces have this? Just like ingredients have to be shown on products you buy, we need more transparency in AI for users!

Having seen Steeve’s work firsthand at Zenly without ever bragging uselessly this is quite a statement.🥇 Too bad I understand shit abt Zml though 😅
I think @zml_ai is by far the most complex project I’ve ever worked on. And it works beautifully.

Subscriptions are annoying, but it’s so much better to pay for apps with a little of your money than a lot of your attention (on ads and ad-like content). You are your attention.
Subscriptions are annoying. But for indie apps, I look at it differently. You're not buying a product. You're supporting a creator and funding the fight against boring.

The key to high work satisfaction — if you are a true craftsperson / builder in a mid-sized startup or a large company — is to choose to do more work every day that will directly improve your product, business, and team, while avoiding most of the optics work that is actually designed to make middle managers feel smart / useful / busy and in reality either adds little value or even negative value. Bonus points if you can manage to report to a manager who understands this and will shield you from the silly optics work & the TPS report du jour.

Meta's Renaissance. Meta’s trajectory over the past few years has been defined by its response to Apple’s App Tracking Transparency, or ATT, privacy policy, with its recovery serving as a blueprint for success in the modern digital advertising operating environment. And in adapting to ATT, Meta may have executed one of the most remarkable, wholesale business model transitions in modern corporate history. The company transformed the core engagement model of its two flagship products, Facebook and Instagram, while re-engineering the digital advertising infrastructure that serves as the singular revenue engine of its business. And in doing so, Meta grew its stock price from a low point of less than $100 in February 2023 — a level the company hadn’t seen since 2016 — to over $600 today. How did Meta go from a 4% year-over-year revenue decline in Q3 2022, with Mark Zuckerberg earnestly entreating investors to remain patient, to 25% revenue growth in Q3 2023? And what catalyzed both of these inflections? In this week's episode of the Mobile Dev Memo podcast, I explore Meta’s renaissance: the factors that led to the company’s tumultuous decline in 2022 and, critically, what the company changed to invigorate growth in 2023 and 2024.

Why I'm Starting a Newsletter. @playbook_co Happy New Year. I couldn’t be more thrilled about 2025 and what’s next with the playbook. I hope your 2025 is shaping up to be just as exciting. Design has never been just a job for me; it’s been a survival strategy, a passion, and, at times, therapy. For years now, I’ve been throwing down random notes—personal observations, educated guesses, and raw knowledge I’ve gathered over the course of my career. Following Snap’s announcement of Zenly being shut down in 2022, I poured some of those thoughts into two widely shared Medium articles(Part III is still due…). Writing those turned out to be a proof of concept—showing me that maybe, just maybe, people might care about what I have to say. I promised myself I’d write more. But before I even started, I embarked on an even more exciting adventure with friends: @amoamoamo . It’s been an amazing and humbling experience. One that comes with hard-learned lessons and challenges. Fast forward to today, and those notes are still piling up. It feels like the right time to turn them into something real—a newsletter that’s now fully part of my new ventures. Why the playbook. When I started in design more than a decade ago, there weren’t any tutorials or guides to help me navigate the craft or my career. I got my start by literally filling pixels, one by one, in a 16x16px Photoshop canvas for the first Behance text editor UI. I’ll save that story for another time, but my point is: I wish I’d known where to look or what to read to become a successful designer. Even now, I get asked the same questions over and over: • “Can you jump on a quick call for some career advice?” • “What’s your secret to designing products people love?” • “Are you available for a quick coffee?” It’s flattering, but unsustainable—and honestly, not the best way to provide value at scale. So yeah. The playbook. It’s my way of giving back but also creating something deeper—a space for connection, dialogue, and growth. An attempt to share guidance, insights, and tools with a personal angle and transparency. I could have named it The Grind or The Hustle (though I hear that one’s taken?), but this name felt just right. Ballsy? Sure. Arrogant? Not really. It’s a paradox—because there’s no actual playbook for design or startups. The rules are unwritten, constantly changing, and often meant to be broken. It’s about helping you thrive in design, helping you navigate the appealing yet messy waters of startup life, and beyond. What you’ll get. The playbook will start as a bi-weekly newsletter, with the potential to evolve. Long term, I don’t expect to be the sole author of the playbook. In the meantime, here’s what you can expect: - Actionable advice on design and startups. - Stories and lessons from my journey. - Insights you won’t find in any traditional design publications. - Cool things that inspire me, and friends. - Some playbook projects that might get built in public in the future—two apps are already in the works, plus another small but cool designer thing. It won’t stop there though. I’m planning to create a community space—a place where we can discuss, debate, and learn together. Whether it’s sharing tips, breaking down challenges, or exploring the latest trends, this will be a space for connection and growth. Thanks for the support, see you soon with the first real post. How does 2025 look like for you btw? news.theplaybook.company/p/w…

I love Duolingo but their entire feed is people desperate after losing their streak. Missing 1 day after 800 is perfectly normal—it shouldn't send people into a panic. The point of building a habit is that it becomes automatic and you no longer need to think about it. This feels like the opposite.

Life Update 🗞️ Seeing @jose_goncalves_ share his update yesterday reminded me to post mine before the year ends (thanks, Jose jose). After the Zenly shutdown by Snap in 2022, we decided to build amo, a place for Friends (beautifully announced by @SarahMcBride). It was intense, to say the least. A LOT of prototypes, Figma shortcuts nights, weekends sacrificed, canceled holidays, experiments with sounds and haptics @myoontheband 💖. I'm forever grateful, as, along the way, I met new truly amazing people. After we shipped the first three apps, I realized I didn't want to miss important moments anymore with my two daughters (1 and 3 years old at the time). I would regret not focusing on them instead of the company, so I stepped out. I’m incredibly proud of what we crafted and grateful for the privilege of creating with @julienmartin_ the best design dream team imaginable. @jose_goncalves_, @Valentin_Fgrs, Ingrid Ma, @loading_samir, @iamnalimov, and @ben_cotte. Absolute legends. 🐐 Since then I've been helping Friends like @photoroom_app, @yubo_app, @MakataStudio or @anagramclub and focusing on some exciting new projects (yes, cool things are cooking!). Now, I’m stepping into a new chapter and I’ll share more details in early 2025. For now, here’s to new beginnings and Friends. ✨
Where did our friends go?? The bike rides. The sleepovers. Your first cigarette. Gossiping about your latest crush. Being consoled when they break your heart. Discovering a new city. Re-discovering your own (at 2AM). The hungover brunches. The tears. The laughs. The love. So many of the moments that shaped us were shared with friends. And then those moments started happening online. Posting photos from last night’s party. Tagging your latest situationship. Poking your roommate (whatever that means??). It was exciting and well intentioned, but something got lost along the way. The platforms that were built to bring friends closer together became places we go to scroll through videos… of strangers. We’re entertained, but where did our friends go? We started amo because we believe that friendship still deserves a place online. We’re a group of friends who have spent our lives building stuff for friends. And now, we’re getting ready to share something new for you and your crew. We call it amo. And to us, amo is more than a company. It’s a friend affair, « une affaire d’amitié ». Something we’re making for you, but for us too. Our first idea is almost here. We hope you love it as much as we love making it. Welcome to amo.
