Storytelling is critical in electoral politics. But the gap between political storytelling and official data has rarely been wider.
As @benoypeter argues, “When we talk about new investments in a state, we must also examine their nature. A Memorandum of Understanding.
does not always translate into concrete investments on the ground. Moreover, most new investments in India today are highly mechanised and capital-intensive. As a result, they do not always generate significant new jobs and often fail to address the deepening rural employment crisis, which is increasingly worsened by the climate crisis.”

Sad to see my words manipulated to dramatise the news. As mentioned in the body of the article, I had said, the Muslim workers from Bengal do not celebrate Durga Puja in Kerala. Toufik has not disagreed to that if one reads his response. Have greater expectations from
@ttindia
Benoy Peter, co-founder of the Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development, Kochi, said that at least half the Bengali migrants in Kerala are Muslim and don't celebrate Durga Puja. But Toufik, 33, disagreed

There is no decline in labour migration in India. In fact, migration is increasing, fast tracking human development in rural India
A study Profiling Labour Migration from Daringbadi Block, Kandhamal Dt, by CMID, in partnership with @GramVikasIN & supported by Axis Bank Foundation, uncovers the changing nature of migration from Odisha’s tribal hinterlands. Scan the QR code or follow: tinyurl.com/u9xns8nu

Can anyone help building a web portal for public to report migrant deaths in India?
Most migrant deaths are hushed up and never get reported. If at all, they are reported offline, in the local pages of newspapers. CMID found that over migrant 120 deaths have been reported in India during Jan to June 2024. #migration #migrants #migrantdeaths #CMID

We need measures beyond NREGA to address the livelihood challenges in rural India. At the same time we can increase NREGA wages to 400 and workdays to 300 per year.

“The new government will need to tackle unemployment, stagnant wages and losses linked to climate change in the countryside”
“All successive governments have miserably failed to address (this economic distress”
@benoypeter
Here is my analysis on how livelihoods as an agenda is faring in the election manifestos of major parties.

Workers come to cities with a hope of earning something, saving something, becoming more resilient to their shocks. But those who engage them in the cities exploit them and generally there isn't anyone to intervene. The India Labourline is evolving as a ray of hope
In the past 18 months, under the guidance of @AajeevikaBureau and @IndiaWpc, CMID helped workers secure over 55 lakhs rupees of unpaid wages/dues through @ILabourline , the national helpline for informal workers in distress.

Nine out of every ten migrant workers in India are not part of any trade unions
#InternationalLaborDay commemorates the historic unity of workers in their struggle for rights. However, for migrant workers, unionisation often falls short, leading to differential pay & exploitation. Integrating them into trade unions is crucial for their rights and welfare.
This is the saddest part of the labour migration in India
Research in Odisha by CMID & @GramVikasIN shows climate change negatively impacts 80% of agri households, driving migration to unsafe urban jobs. Collaborative efforts are needed to improve their occupational safety and health in urban centres.
