Ross is right about the vibrancy of evangelicalism. But a distinction needs to be made. The strongest currents of Protestantism in the US are Wesleyan, not Calvinist, Pentecostal rather than Presbyterian. When intellectual Protestants wax triumphant about an “evangelical century,” they are celebrating the success of a form of Christianity that differs in significant ways from their own.
I was raised in a non-denominational evangelical church. When I became “young, restless, and Reformed,” my parents were alarmed. They asked the pastor how to handle my evident defection from the faith. Whatever I believed, they thought, it wasn’t true Christianity.
Intellectual Protestants—the kind who attend Anglican churches or imbibe high-proof Calvinist texts—represent traditions of belief that have helped shape this country. But in terms of sociology and doctrine, they are alienated from the most vigorous contemporary expressions of American Christianity.
For all the buzz around a ‘Catholic century,’ evangelicalism is the denomination best placed to thrive in contemporary America. thefp.com/p/ross-douthat-our…

I don't agree with everything in this Times interview with @Peter_Wehner but I appreciated theologian and former Harvard divinity professor Sarah Coakley's words of warning here:

The worst C. S. Lewis adaptation was that one where his fans made him into an evangelical.
I'm currently writing my paper for the Romans and Christian Theology conference next weekend @ptseminary!
It offers a proposal for how to move the 'Paul and Politics' conversation beyond Wright-Barclay debates.
Looking forward to the excellent lineup!

Happy Pastor Appreciation Day. We appreciate you keeping the sermon short so we can beat the Methodists to the Golden Corral.

11 years ago this past week we moved to Durham, UK! Time flies but so grateful to have lived and studied there.

The brain trust at Anthropic has no concept of what sin is, as evidenced by the fact that they think a free agent "could be made to choose goodness." It doesn't work that way, I'm afraid. Some famous stories that illustrate this, in fact.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
The advance copies are arriving!! And friends are already posting about the book. Thank you! You can preorder here for an Oct. 20th delivery: tinyurl.com/5n6tdb8e

I’ll believe people are really concerned about the ill effects of parents’ decisions on their children when I hear some concern—any at all—about what wealth and privilege–hoarding does to children. 1/
