Most frontend and design benchmarks evaluate whether models produce working UIs and/or pairwise design preferences of judges.
With this benchmark, we measure something different: the diversity of design decisions a model makes when the problem leaves room for creative exploration.
We construct paired briefs that preserve the underlying UI task while changing the product context.
For example, a clinical dashboard and a pharmacy operations dashboard share related functional requirements but call for different information architectures and visual hierarchies.
Models receive no prescribed layout or visual direction.
We then compare their generated interfaces using a similarity metric that measures structural composition and information architecture, with color evaluated separately.
This allows us to measure whether a model meaningfully changes its design approach, rather than merely changing content or styling.
⚠️ Frontier AI models still fall significantly short of human designers on design creativity. ⚠️
Introducing Design Creativity Bench, a new benchmark evaluating AI models’ creativity on UI design tasks.
Despite rapid advances in their ability to generate functional websites and product UIs, leading AI models still struggle to make creative design decisions.
We evaluated 16 frontier models across 80 open-ended UI tasks, each adapted to two distinct product domains alongside human designer references.
Existing UI benchmarks often measure a single output quality metric. Instead, we measure three dimensions of design creativity:
- Originality: How distinct a model's designs are from other models' outputs for the same brief.
- Creative Range: How much a model adapts its design decisions when the product domain changes.
- Appropriateness: How well the generated UI satisfies the functional requirements of the brief.
The results reveal a substantial gap in overall creativity: The best model, @OpenAI GPT-6 Astra, scores 65.5 against a human reference of 92.3.
We're publishing the full leaderboard, methodology, and reproducible evaluation framework to make design creativity a measurable dimension of frontier model capability.

Humans vs AI - who's more creative?

Great work tends to repeat itself.
As we curated Selects, the same names kept surfacing. So we built a leaderboard to recognize the designers and teams whose work consistently stands out.
Rankings are based on the number of unique designs we’ve featured, across monthly + all-time views.
This month’s Top 10:
1. Jack R (Ron Design Lab) @Rondesignlab
2. @raul_dronca
3. @OrbixStudio
4. @joshpuckett
5. @Designownow_
6. @oliverhamrin
7. @its_sslvr
8. @proskuaaa
9. @jeetnirnejak
10. @vukmx @veloraxstudio
Everyone in the Top 10 gets a dedicated designer profile they can verify and make their own, with their bio, portfolio, socials and any other links they want people to find.
The Top 3 gets Kombai swag, a special leaderboard badge, a feature in Taste Weekly, and extra coverage across our social channels.
Monthly rankings reset every month.
All-time keeps the history.

New models make your coding agents smarter. But they still have no taste.
So we made Kombai Gallery: 20,000+ standout UI designs they can actually build from.
Free forever. No email. No paywall.
These aren’t screenshots. Every design is live.
Open one → click around → copy the prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or any other agent.
Most AI tools can generate code. But few get the craft, rigor and quality required for building great user experiences.
For Kombai 2.0, we rebuilt the stack around the hard parts: design taste, a real-code canvas, consistent code reuse from repo/Storybook/npm, and canvas <> code <> browser sync.
It’s the AI design engineer I always wanted.
Introducing Kombai 2.0 - the first AI design engineer.
We keep hearing that AGI is almost here. Still, we’re stuck with coding agents that don’t have taste and design tools that don’t understand our codebase. Both are artifacts of a world where design and engineering were two different jobs, with a handoff in between.
That world is changing fast. Today, designers ship code, engineers want to escape handoffs, and everyone wants to build tasteful UX.
Kombai is built for this new world.
Design and engineering, finally on the same side.

Good morning! Microsoft Build starts in about an hour and @Dipanjan_Dey brings a new taste to builders.
One of the things I've learned by building alignednews.com/ai is that AIs tend to have "blah" design tastes.
Great to see AI tools take design seriously.
It's a great day for builders.

To all the devs who filed bugs, requested features, and gave us a shot: a huge thank you!
This is still the day 0 of what we are building…
200,000 installs! We are completely blown away. 🚀
We knew developers needed a specialized coding agent for frontend tasks, we just didn't realize how many of you would find us so quickly. Thank you for your support, your patience with our early bugs, and your amazing feedback.
To celebrate this milestone, we're doing a giveaway. DM us a pic of your pet. The first 20 people get a $100 Kombai PRO plan for 1 month, completely free.
Real pets, cartoon pets, AI-generated pets all are welcome.
Scooby-Doo, Bolt, Bluey, Doge… send the good boys our way 🐶

200k installs is an incredible milestone, but the bigger thing is the signal: devs want specialized agents, not just the general-purpose ones.
Thank you to everyone building with us. We're just getting started.
P.S. looking forward to the cartoon pets :-)

Our early users loved our agent mode launch this month!
Kombai now writes frontend code directly to your repo and runs terminal commands on your behalf. It installs dependencies, sets up your environment, and fixes the terminal errors iteratively. As an extension available on all your favorite IDEs, this is something you cannot achieve in browser-based prototyping tools.
The generated code integrates with your codebase and previews instantly on the localhost. You can easily undo any changes and configure it to either run commands automatically or wait for your approval.
Here's what it looks like in action:

CursorやClaude Codeが全然いい感じにUIデザイン実装してくれなかった(というより壊滅的・・・)のでこれはめちゃくちゃ助かりますね!

This will shock frontend developers.
Kombai is a @code extension that can generate 100% of your frontend code by looking at Figma designs.
And the code is pretty good!
My first full year freelancing was doing this. It blows my mind that AI can now do a much better job at a fraction of the time.
Kombai is not a generic assistant or a prototyping tool. It's a domain-specific AI agent specialized in writing frontend code, and it blows generic agents out of the water:
30-60% better than generic models (such as Claude 4 and Gemini 2.5 Pro) across various benchmarks in frontend tasks (see attached benchmark).
A few highlights:
• You can show Kombai a Figma design or a screenshot
• It can build your entire application's UI
• It can also build specific UI components
• It can refactor your project
• It generates good code. It can easily pass code reviews
You can install the Kombai extension in @code or @cursor. You can also download it from their website (.com).
I'd love to hear from frontend developers how a tool like Kombai changes their work.
Thanks to the Kombai team for helping me understand their tool and collaborating on this post.
After months of building, learning, and refining with hundreds of amazing frontend devs, today feels special…✨
We’re launching the first-ever domain-specific agent for Frontend!
Built with care, passion, and your incredible feedback.
Can’t wait for you to try it! 🚀💙

This looks awesome! As an indie hacker that is building in public, coding up a landing page or webpage takes some time cause of how tedious CSS can be
Looking forward to using Kombai!
