As the sun sets on the last evening of Suicide Prevention Month, I’m reminded that for families like mine, this doesn’t end when September does. We lost our son Hayden to suicide in 2020, just days before his 13th birthday. 6 days later, Dak Prescott lost his brother Jace to suicide. Since then, our families have tried to turn unimaginable loss into purpose to talk about mental health, to show up for young people, and to remind people that hope is worth fighting for. This month has been especially meaningful. I’m grateful to people like Dak Prescott, Cooper, and so many others who continue to use their voices and platforms to make sure people know they are not alone. Tomorrow is October. The posts and awareness campaigns will slow down. But the mission doesn’t. Check on your people. Have the uncomfortable conversation. Tell someone you love them. And if someone is struggling, help them find hope for one more day. There is always HOPE! ☀️ #Ask4Hope For Hayden. And for every family fighting to make sure another chair doesn’t become empty. ❤️🕊️ @HaydensCorner @FFFfoundation4 @dak #YourLifeMatters #SuicidePreventionMonth #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #Hope

Peter joins a long line of excellent people who have gotten to work on Twitter / X product. But this may be one of the best ever. He got Snap and Discord scaling and to their first $1B revenue and now can take X to the next level. Have known him a long time , so happy !!
I’m joining the team at @X to lead Product. I am a huge believer in @SpaceX's mission to extend human consciousness to the stars, so it’s time to make shitposting multiplanetary. X is the best way to find out what’s happening in the world right now and talk about it. The team has been working tirelessly to make X a better place and product for the people who love it, and many have noticed the recent momentum. My goal is to help accelerate that momentum for our community, new users, and businesses globally by continuing to make this product beautiful and useful. We are twenty years in, but it truly feels like X’s next chapter will be our greatest. I look forward to your ideas and feedback; I’m sure the replies will be measured and magnanimous.

A retired NASA engineer who had worked on the Space Shuttle program for 25 years was hired by SpaceX at age 62. He described the first week as the most disorienting experience of his professional life. At NASA, a design change required 3 meetings, 2 committees, a review board, and 6 to 18 months of documentation. At SpaceX, his new supervisor said "if it works, build it. If it doesn't, change it by Friday." He sat at his desk after the first day and called his wife. He told her he felt like a man who had been swimming with ankle weights for 25 years and someone just cut them off. He could move. He could decide. He could build something in the morning and test it in the afternoon. The constraint that he had accepted as the nature of aerospace engineering turned out to be the nature of bureaucracy. Within 6 months he had contributed to more design iterations than he had completed in his last 5 years at NASA. Not because he was working harder. Because the time between having an idea and testing the idea collapsed from months to hours. The same brain. The same knowledge. A different operating system. He described a specific moment where he proposed a modification to a Raptor engine component. At NASA, the proposal would have entered a queue. At SpaceX, the modification was machined by the end of the day and tested by the following morning. He watched his idea become a physical object in 18 hours. At NASA, 18 hours would not have been enough to schedule the first meeting to discuss whether to schedule a meeting. He told an interviewer: "I didn't get smarter when I went to SpaceX. I got faster. The intelligence was always there. The system was in the way." The difference between SpaceX and NASA is not talent. NASA has extraordinary talent. The difference is the time between a thought and a test. SpaceX compresses it. NASA elongates it. The same engineer produces 10x more at SpaceX than at NASA because the bottleneck was never the engineer. It was the meetings about the meetings about the work.

Marc Andreessen reveals why housing, health care, and education keep getting more expensive while everything else gets cheaper "There's basically three components to the American dream. A house near great job opportunities, great health care for you and your family, and sending your kids to good schools" "If you disaggregate the economy over the last 25 years, everything that technology touches basically collapses in price. Television sets, computer games, anything with electronics in it. But if you chart housing, education, and health care, the prices of those things are skyrocketing" "The government restricts supply, zoning laws and university certifications. And then the government responds to the political pressure caused by the rising prices by subsidizing demand. And of course, if you subsidize demand and a fixed supply, you get skyrocketing prices"
