Because rural migrants are deterred far more by distance than they are drawn by higher pay, nearby towns – despite offering lower earnings than cities – end up absorbing far more migrants and doing more to reduce poverty, making them a decisive channel for inclusive urban growth.
🆕 Proximity over pay: Why small towns attract migrants
Today on VoxDev, Joachim De Weerdt (@IFPRI), Luc Christiaensen (@WorldBankGroup) & Ravi Kanbur (@CornellEcon) discuss migration flows across cities and towns in Tanzania: voxdev.org/topic/migration-u…

While studying women nano entrepreneurs' financial lives, our fieldwork helped in classifying them into three categories: 𝐆𝐮𝐧𝐠-𝐇𝐨 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫, 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫. We believe that this categorisation most accurately captures the subtle differences in entrepreneurial orientation and provides clearer identification markers for further enquiry into their money management habits.

#Opinion | #India’s last-mile credit system has faced shocks in 2010, 2016, 2020, and 2024, cutting off households from formal credit. Harmonising bank-NBFC partnerships, diversifying #NBFC funding, and using income-based borrower assessment are key to steady access, write @binduananth and Samir Shah

Serious illnesses like cancer and neurological disorders not only affect the patient, but push the entire families into social and financial vulnerability, said two studies that focused on India’s home-based palliative care and its consequences on families in Kerala and Delhi, two states which are considered to provide better healthcare.
The two studies also found that families providing home-care palliative care often have to make difficult choices between medicines, food and education.
What is shocking is that in the two states, around one in three families were in debt due to illness, making healthcare-related debt a national challenge.
