To #vote, or not to vote? 🗳️ In the case of #teens, stereotypes might push us to say they shouldn't be given the option. However, developmental research actually suggests allowing 16 & 17 year olds vote wouldn't be as big of a problem as some might think! doi.org/10.1177/174569162199…

I am, once again, asking people to stop using resilience as an individual trait (instead of a process or outcome). We gotta stop shifting the blame onto individuals for failing in failing systems.
Did it hurt? When you poured out your trauma to get into med school and were praised for being resilient and then were thrown to the wolves in a toxic system that turned its back on you while asking why you weren’t resilient enough to take the abuse?

I start my adolescent development class talking about how we define adolescence and the implications of those definitions. The voting age is one of the markers separating adulthood that students mention. This paper looks great for student learning, debate, & discussion!
Should we lower the US voting age to 16? **New research** forthcoming in Perspectives on Psych Science where we tackle 5 common concerns about lowering the voting age. TLDR; many concerns about changing the voting age are not supported by developmental science. 🧵

Friendly reminder that the concept of the “youth vote” is deeply oversimplified and yes, the issue lies exactly where you’d expect it to.

“For Americans in a socially isolating culture, living under an all but broken political system, the consumer realm is the place where many people can most consistently feel as though they are asserting their agency.”
I wrote about why American shoppers are such abusive nightmares to service workers. It's gotten worse during the pandemic, but consumerism was always designed for exactly this result. theatlantic.com/health/archi…

Will die on the hill that research design literacy gaps are a bigger issue than data literacy gaps (which is usually a subset of the former)

Sharpen your intuitions about plausibility of observed effect sizes. r > .60? Is that effect plausibly as large as the relationship between gender and height (.67) or nearness to the equator and temperature (.60)?

Academic writing 🧵 Having come from journalism to research, I don't like that abstracts and intros take forever to get to the point, usually starting with obvious truths and platitudes. In my field, I play "robots are entering our daily lives" bingo whenever I review a paper. 1/

I wrote a blog post called "A Beginner's Guide to Social Domain Theory." It's a Q & A designed to introduce people to the theory of moral development introduced by Turiel, Smentana, and Nucci. Take a look and let me know if you have any more Qs for me. clareconrymurray.com/blog-2/
