Elon and Chamath are talking their books, but Meta's Schedule 14C shows it saw the debt market issue back in the summer.
July: Meta's bankers warned of less favorable debt markets for hyperscalers.
August: credit tightened, and its July bond for the Texas data center JV saw weaker demand.
Hence the Class C shares. An equity channel that doesn't rely on debt markets.
That leaves $META in a unique spot: a hyperscaler with $64.6B in Q3 revenue that doesn't depend on selling AI compute.
Plus a second revenue line in Muse.
Pretty much.
As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers.
SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue.
That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.
