Letter to @JaMorant
The thought of Ja Morant leaving Memphis fills me with a kind of grief that’s hard to explain.
It isn’t just about basketball. It never was.
It’s about watching another brilliant Black son of this city carry a weight that was never his to carry alone.
That’s the story so many of our young people know. We ask them to become adults long before they’ve had the chance to simply be children. We expect them to help hold families together because wages won’t. We demand maturity from people whose brains and bodies are still developing. We celebrate their talent, but rarely make room for their humanity.
Then, the moment they stumble, we act as though they were never allowed to grow in the first place.
Ja became a symbol for all of that.
People were eager to flatten him into every ugly stereotype they’ve ever assigned to young Black men. They called him a thug. They turned every growing pain into a national spectacle. They judged him by standards that so many others never have to meet. Because when you’re Black, gifted, and visible, excellence is never enough. You’re expected to be flawless. You’re expected to be grateful. You’re expected to shrink yourself into something that makes everyone else comfortable.
And if you refuse—if you remain rooted in where you come from, if you wear your neighborhood instead of running from it, if you insist on succeeding without abandoning yourself—you become a problem to be managed instead of a person to be understood.
I’ve seen that story play out in Memphis for decades.
We lose our brightest minds, our greatest artists, our strongest athletes, not simply because opportunity exists somewhere else, but because too often we fail to protect them while they’re here. We consume them. We criticize them. We expect perfection while extending very little grace.
That hurts.
So whatever comes next for Ja, I hope it’s the same thing I hope for every Black child who comes out of this city.
I hope you find people who love you more than they love what you produce.
I hope your success never requires you to abandon yourself.
I hope nobody steals that grit, that joy, or that unmistakable Memphis spirit that made the world notice you in the first place.
Keep grinding, mane. Memphis is at its best when its children don’t have to leave to finally be free.

🚨 EXCLUSIVE: A leaked CPAC press memo shows the “Third Term Project” hosting a Feb. 20 event titled “The Case for Presidential Tenure Reform.”
They’re openly arguing for a constitutional amendment to let Trump serve up to three terms; citing “unfinished business” and “continuity.”
This isn’t subtle anymore. It’s a blueprint for permanent power.

Let’s be Clear: Black August is about POLITICAL PRISONERS who were killed in combat, assassinated, martyred and held captive. ANYTHING outside of that is viewed as cooptation. You can’t just alter Black August because of what you think it “should be”.

Megan Thee Stallion responds to criticism over her performance at Kamala Harris rally:
“They was fake mad that I was popping it for Kamala. And I don’t think they heard what she said. Kamala said she wants a ceasefire. Kamala said she supports women’s rights. Kamala said she’s tired of the high a** gas prices. Kamala said I’m for people… Hotties for Harris!”

When y’all gone do the analysis and assessment of the strategies and tactics that YOU led and learned from that aint about others or that attempts to place the blame on the unorganized and unsupported organizing masses. – at Minneapolis, MN
I am tired of this building resilient organizations article
I am tired of folks who claimed leadership, especially as part of national orgs with no strong local, state or regional level basebuilding attached now talking about how our movement is anti strategy, anti tactics, etc – at Minneapolis, MN
