Want to know more about our landscape business? Here is a deeper dive based on many of your questions. Before we dive in: -6M in Revenue - ~60 employees - Residential lawn, landscape, irrigation - 0 acquisitions to date (except small irrigation co). Revenue mix: - 50% maintenance. But 0 contracts. - 35% enhancements (1x jobs) - 8% irrigation - 5% fertilization and weed control (but outsourced) - rest is other @Taylorstreetcap Profits: - We are currently running at about 8% bottom line, but it has been a really brutal last couple of months with the weather and I expect it to hurt us pretty bad. My goal is to top 10% consistently. Haven't been able to do that to date. How to attract good folks: We are very fortunate to have a great team. We have multiple people that have worked here for over a decade. There is no silver bullet. I wish I knew how. We get long-term guys one at a time. The biggest wins are when people return after leaving. That shows that we are doing something right. It has happened 5 times this year. We hire off of indeed and referrals. We pay our current team members $200 if they bring someone that last longer than 2 weeks. We do not currently use visas but we need to start soon. Everyone on our team has proper documentation (hard to do in this market). @realAAAbbott @wardwilsey @smkun79161025 @TigertailCap @EricVevang @Bcowley21 Customer Retention: 75%. It should be higher. We are working on it. But when people move, it is hard to retain a house. This is easier for commercial. @TrevRosenthal Why is revenue per employee so low?...we suck? Jk...I think this is pretty standard for our industry. I think we can improve it somewhat by decreasing OH %. What are we charging per hour? We shoot for $65/MH on site for mowing and up to $100 / hr for landscaping. @helloduff2 Is the company for sale...no...but if you make me an offer I can't refuse...maybe...I get asked to sell often. I tell them I am interested...in 30 years. @MikeBotkin_ @adamislucky Marketing: we spend less than 1% of revenue on marketing. I think we need to spend more. This is a current focus. @AnthonyTumbiolo Culture building: I am not sure I have a good answer. Cliche but true: trust is built over years and lost in seconds. I work really hard to be worth following and provide opportunity for the entire team. Everyone wants something slightly different out of work, but everyone also wants to be respected and challenged to be their best. @TheSuddenWealth Density of routes: This is very important for profitability. We work really hard to be strict on our service area to improve this annually. This also makes acquisitions exciting bc it can help. @LunatekFringe Creative marketing: We did a lot of funny meme yard signs this year. It was fun but didn't have great results. @RandBusiness Suppliers and vendors: we build these relationships over years. The guys that are good get a lot of business from us. But a lot of these decisions are based on proximity. The vendors that are easy to access get the business. @ZacGawn I speak Spanish pretty well but I am far from fluent. I try to practice daily. @DTSpann Software: We use service autopilot. It is a software specifically designed for residential lawncare. It is pretty good but not excellent. it has degraded. But we are super committed to it and it would be a huge lift to switch. Not interested right now. This took some time to put together so I would appreciate some love. give me a follow or comment or ask another question.
I run a 6M residential landscaping co. Next week I am going to write a thread that breaks down a lot of our sales and marketing efforts, vendors, what we roughly pay, etc. Example: google ads vs fliers. Also…I pay $100s of thousands on materials. What do you want to know?

Raw / emotional post: we need to re-home our dog Rio, who is eight & I've raised since he was 2 months. He is sweet & a great companion but really needs to be in a home with no other dogs & no kids. Sharing this w/ my network in the hopes that you or someone you know might want him. If I can't find someone for him I'm not sure what we'll do; putting him in a shelter would stress him out & ruin his personality, so it would need to be a foster-only situation. Or we may end up having to put him down, which would be really painful, but preferable to putting him in a really uncertain long term situation. I think an ideal home for him would be an empty nester couple w/ at least one runner (he's a great running buddy) who don't mind traveling with a dog & don't need to put him in doggie daycare. Please help me out by sharing this, & feel free to ask me anything about him.
