🦁 Lions -3.5
156-66 POD record
Let’s get paid tonight 💰
Lions -3.5 is one of those spots where I’m willing to lay more than a field goal because Detroit owns the matchup advantage in the area I consider most stable and predictive: offensive down-to-down efficiency against a depleted Green Bay pass rush. Through five games, Detroit is generating +0.18 EPA/play, 5.9 yards per play and 3.1 points per drive. Green Bay is sitting at -0.03 EPA/play and only 1.9 points per drive. That isn’t a small gap created by turnover variance—it’s a major difference in how consistently these offenses are generating value possession to possession.
Jared Goff is the centerpiece. He enters with +0.283 EPA per dropback and a 50.0% success rate, compared with Jordan Love at +0.112 and 42.9%. Goff has also thrown 12 touchdowns without an interception. More importantly for projecting forward, his clean-pocket passer rating is 122.7 and he’s completing 74.1% when kept clean. Green Bay’s ability to disrupt that environment is badly compromised: Micah Parsons and Edgerrin Cooper are already on IR, and now Zaire Franklin is out. Those are three of Green Bay’s most important pressure pieces. Without them, the Packers become increasingly dependent on manufactured pressure rather than winning four-man rushes—which is exactly what you don’t want against an offense with Detroit’s protection, play-action structure and answers underneath.
The rushing matchup gives Detroit another way to stay efficient. Jahmyr Gibbs already has 747 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns in five games, and Green Bay’s clearest defensive failure came against Atlanta when Bijan Robinson stressed its leverage and tackling structure. That matters because Detroit doesn’t need to expose Goff to obvious passing downs. Gibbs forces linebackers and safeties downhill, opening the intermediate play-action windows where Goff has been lethal.
Then flip it around. Green Bay is averaging only 2.87 yards per carry, the worst rushing figure in football, which puts more burden on Love against a Detroit front with 20 sacks. Aaron Banks is questionable, while Detroit comes out of its bye with Brian Branch, Cade Mays and Rock Ya-Sin all finishing the week as full participants. That is a meaningful rest-and-health asymmetry, not just a narrative angle.
Detroit has also had two weeks to prepare for this matchup, while Green Bay now enters Ford Field before turning around for Philadelphia on Thursday. I expect Detroit to win early downs, protect Goff, force Green Bay into a higher pass rate than it wants and gradually create separation.
