I speak for all Clevelanders who are old enough to have lived through overtime of The Drive when I say this: “Too soon.”
In a 2012 Sunday night game, the Ravens beat the Patriots on a last-second FG that sailed so high over the upright, the Patriots insisted you couldn’t tell if it was wide or good. Bill Belichick and the Patriots, the next spring, proposed changing the uprights from 30 to 40 feet. Ultimately, a rule change went into effect changing the uprights to 35 feet - because engineers said 40 would require installing all new concrete and rebar under the posts, but at 35, the NFL could use what was existing - and save money.
(I covered that game. And while in my personal memory it’s the Torrey Smith game, not the goal post game - I did once do an NFL Explained podcast on goal posts and learned ALL the things on those big yellow structures.)
