Albanese's proposal to water down Australian copyright to appease AI companies is a "terrible betrayal", writes Richard Flanagan in a blistering piece. "The government’s secret proposals on AI copyright effectively amount to handing over our culture to a handful of anti-democratic oligarchs and raising the spectre of Australia becoming a vassal state." "A government that doesn’t understand its nation’s culture is a government incapable of leading the nation." deepcutnews.com/p/the-great-…

Anthropic & Open AI want Aust govt to weaken copyright law so they can shift model training to Aust. What they dont say is an Aust opt-in/out system would let them copy global material without paying, as long as it’s copied in Aust. My piece here: insidestory.org.au/will-aust…

Labor has effectively abolished the third-year backpacker visa: an 84% cut, down to just 5,000 spots via lottery. Combined with second-year cuts, total visas fall 44%. Stephen Howes says this could mean 18,300 fewer backpackers on farms. devpolicy.org/labor-comes-cl…

Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, the Tui Nayau in Fiji, has called on Parliament not to approve the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union or the Ocean of Peace Alliance (Veitacini Treaty) without “a full, fearless, and independent account” of how the treaties impact the nation's sovereignty.

Priceless. From Albanese and Wale meeting in New York on UNGA sidelines. The last time they met, in Solomon Islands, Albanese (like everyone!) sat through a rather marathon Wale speech at Independence Day celebrations. Wale: "I gave you a Fidel"

For a long time, Sky News was easy to dismiss as a broom closet operation. The WIN deal has changed that. There is a growing recognition that News24’s free-to-air broadcasts in regional areas are shifting voters towards One Nation. trib.al/VyzVpEI

After the Trump administration refuses visas for the Palestinian delegation to attend the UN General Assembly session, UNGA votes 152-3-4 to allow Palestinian Authority to speak by video. Notable that only one Forum island state (Vanuatu) actually participates in the vote.

Interesting criticism that too much international media coverage of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum focussed on China/Taiwan, rather than what Forum members are doing to address regional concerns - especially because it comes from the US State Department! state.gov/virtual-press-brie…

Nothing startling, but for those tracking closely - Tonga's PM says Tonga and Australia have a "mutual aspiration" to sign the Kaume'a Ofi agreement by the end of this year. No decision yet (unsurprisingly) on joining the Ocean of Peace alliance with Australia, Fiji
