So AC e boarding downloads still not working. They don't seem to really care. Looks like I'll need a printer to board later today. Thanks for the lack of help. @AirCanada

New @nejm study nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE… median 5.1 years MACE = 4.81/1000PY in #pitavastatin and 7.32/1000PY in placebo. Text claims 5 year NNT = 106. What am I missing? Looks like 5 year NNT = 1/(7.32/1000-4.81/1000) = 398 to me. Statistically significant but clinically?

Sad day - my old friend towed way to its demise. But broken power steering, gas leak requiring open windows, battery needing constant jumping, slow tire leak, and the family of mice living in the trunk, just added up to too much. Last drive yesterday, 20 years was a good run!

No phone with me, so this is the best I can do to show the beauty of an early morning country run.

Have a short article deals with teaching, research, biases, critical reading, and foundational past research. No natural home and no interested publisher. So 1st use of medium.com medium.com/@james.brophy/som… Also available on my webpage brophyj.com/post/2023-03-22-…

Building consensus - much published literature of questionable veracity. Read 3 articles this week where conclusions are IMHO, at least marginally, misinformed, or maybe being too “picky”? Discomfort due to (mis) interpretations of p values. Details here brophyj.com/post/2023-04-15-…

Kudos for #nejm article tackling challenging Q of extracorporeal CPR vs conventional CPR. Can Bayesian analysis provide additional insights into the published conclusion of “similar effects on survival”? One answer here submit.medrxiv.org/submissio… @f2harrell @kaulcsmc @drjohnm

About 4 years ago, my son and his wife adopted 2 feral kittens. Guesses as to how many future feral kittens this act may have reduced? Nice bit of #rstats coding here suggests somewhere around 75! r.iresmi.net/2023/02/10/popu…

Without the dog walks, not sure I would get out to enjoy these rather brisk temps, somewhere around -40 to -45C with the wind chill. Not sure how much more of this weather is on the horizon as our local groundhog has died (& made international news) theguardian.com/world/2023/f…

Ok can’t get rid of NHST, how about some common sense in interpretation. Recent paper “hs-cTn was associated with a shorter length of stay (median 47.6 hours vs 48.0 hours; ratio: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.90-0.98).” Δ 24 min! Clinically meaningful? Measurement error? Confounding?

Getting ready for Christmas dinner, along with the youngest family member. Also appreciating how lucky we are to have health, food, shelter, and security.

Just reviewed paper with 18 authors - conclusion no morality difference btw 2 contrasts (RR 1.0, 95% CI 0.5-2.0). Obvious faulty conclusion that mixes "absence of evidence with evidence of absence". My existential question is ...1/2

Are 1) all 18 authors statistically incompetent? Or 2) Only the 1 or 2 authors who probably did the work are incompetent and the other 16-17 just couldn’t be bothered to critically read something they signed their names to? ... 2/2

My university sends weekly teaching tips with a photo header. Today’s doesn’t represent anything I see in class Is this because 1. My questions are too hard or uninteresting 2. Instructor in photo has just said “Screw it, who agrees, no final, everyone just gets an A” 3. Other
